With NBA training camp just a few weeks away and Opening Night on Oct. 19 creeping closer, front offices are still trying to button up their rosters. Some teams are already full. Others still have space for one more veteran - the kind of player who can settle a locker room, soak up minutes and, if the fit is right, give fans a reunion worth talking about.
That brings the conversation to Kevin Love, who spent the summer marking the 10th anniversary of the Cavaliers’ 2016 NBA Finals comeback and even popped up in LeBron James’s YouTube channel debut. Love is still weighing another season before he fully shifts into the YouTube Golf world, and he remains a usable veteran piece.
Last season with the Jazz, he averaged 6.7 points and 5.8 rebounds in 16.6 minutes per game. He’s not going to anchor a playoff rotation, but he can still help in a limited role.
The reunion that makes the most sense is Minnesota. Love spent his first six seasons with the Timberwolves and made three of his five All-Star teams there before leaving in 2014 to chase a title with Cleveland.
Now, 12 years later, Minnesota is an annual contender in a loaded Western Conference, and it has one roster spot open. With Mike Conley, Joe Ingles and Kyle Anderson no longer on the team, the “Veteran Good Guy” role is still waiting to be filled.
The Athletic recently reported there was interest on both sides in a reunion.
Victor Oladipo is another name hanging around the market, and his situation carries a different kind of intrigue. He hasn’t played an NBA game since suffering an injury in the 2023 playoffs, but last week he wrote directly to NBA general managers through The Players Tribune and made his case for one more shot.
“I believe my body is finally right,” Oladipo wrote. “I believe I still have GREAT (and more importantly, WINNING) basketball in front of me.
I believe I can be a valuable contributor to an NBA locker room. And what I’m asking for right now is an opportunity to prove it.”
He did get some game action last season with the G League’s Wisconsin Herd, appearing in 15 games and averaging 13.5 points and 4.6 rebounds in 29.9 minutes per contest. The comeback angle is obvious, and so is the appeal.
A Miami return would fit the bill. The Sun Sentinel reported the Heat have been monitoring Oladipo’s comeback attempt, and the fit isn’t hard to see.
He played 54 games for Miami from 2021 to ’23 and helped the team reach the 2022 Eastern Conference finals. Then he was stuck watching the run to the ’23 Finals from the sideline after tearing his patellar tendon in the first round.
Seth Curry is still out there too, searching for a home for his 13th NBA season. He has worn 10 different uniforms - 33% of the league - and since 2022 he’s played in Brooklyn, Charlotte, Dallas and Golden State while averaging 7.1 points and shooting 41.5% from three over that stretch.
The reunion that stands out here is Golden State, and more specifically, a chance to share the floor with Steph Curry. Seth’s first run with the Warriors didn’t exactly go smoothly.
He signed with the team last fall, was waived in training camp, then signed again in December. Even then, the brothers managed only three games together because both missed most of the second half of the season with injuries.
“I mean, absolutely,” Curry told NBC Sports Bay Area this summer when asked about a return to the Warriors. “I wasn't able to do everything I wanted to do on the floor last year, but I always got a lot of love for the organization, the fans-first class. … It’s disappointing what I dealt with last season.”

The Heat have already made a point of addressing one of their biggest needs by bringing in Tim Hardaway Jr. and Klay Thompson on short-term deals, adding more perimeter shooting to a roster that has been looking for it. Even with those moves, Miamis backcourt picture is still worth watching, especially with a former familiar face still sitting on the market.
Gabe Vincent is currently a free agent and has been mentioned as a possible fit for Miami because of what he has already shown in a Heat uniform, along with his ability to space the floor. After being traded from the Lakers to the Hawks last season, he is still waiting on his next NBA opportunity, and Miami remains one of the more natural landing spots if the team decides it wants even more guard depth. Davion Mitchell is already giving Heat fans one more storyline to track as the season approaches. The guard, expected to open as Miamis starting point man, recently posted a beach message that seemed to point toward a bigger individual goal, and it fits the broader expectation that he can build on a productive previous season while sharing the floor with several star teammates.
Mitchells path to a bigger role is pretty clear on paper. With defenses likely focused on Miamis main options, he should get more chances to make plays and boost his offense, but how much that translates into a real leap is still the open question.
