Erik Spoelstra didn’t flinch when the skepticism came up on media day. If anything, he seemed to welcome it.
The Miami Heat have been treated like an afterthought by plenty of outsiders before they’ve even opened training camp, but Spoelstra made it clear that kind of noise fits him just fine. Asked about the doubters even after the acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo, he leaned right into the challenge.

That mindset has never been foreign to Spoelstra or the Heat. In fact, the underdog label has often been part of what’s driven them, and it has helped fuel two surprising runs to the NBA Finals in the last six years.

Giannis is now the leading man, and with that comes a new layer of pressure and possibility. The Heat are no longer just a team trying to prove people wrong with a roster of good-but-not-great pieces. They now have a player who can turn that doubt into something even more dangerous, especially if the outside chatter gives him extra fuel.
And the skepticism hasn’t stopped at the team level. Giannis has heard plenty of it himself. Analysts have labeled him injury-prone, past his prime, and not a strong enough leader, and that narrative has been building around him all offseason.
That gives him a chance to answer the only way that really matters.
