Nikola Jovic enters this Miami Heat season in a tricky spot: the contract is there, the talent is there, but the path to real minutes looks crowded.
That’s the tension hanging over a forward who signed a four-year, $62.5 million extension before last season, a deal that is now starting to kick in. Miami’s belief in the 2022 first-round pick was obvious when Pat Riley and the front office handed it out. But after Jovic was largely an afterthought late in the regular season and appeared in only eight games after January, the move already looks like one the Heat may wish they could revisit.
The timing makes the whole thing even more interesting. Miami’s offseason brought in Giannis Antetokounmpo and Klay Thompson, and those additions changed the shape of the roster in a major way.
It also meant there were opportunities to move Jovic elsewhere, especially with his age still giving him value around the league. At one point, rumors even tied him to Dallas in a deal for Thompson.
That never happened - the Mavericks waived Thompson, and now both players are on Miami’s roster.
Still, writing off Jovic now would be premature. He’s young, and there’s enough upside here to justify patience. Erik Spoelstra has a long track record of getting more out of young players than most coaches can, and if anyone in the league can squeeze real production out of Jovic, it’s him.
The challenge is simple: minutes are going to be hard to find. Antetokounmpo is set to absorb most of the power forward work, and Bobby Portis plus Simone Fontecchio are also in line for backup time.
Jovic’s salary won’t change that. What could change it is performance.
If he earns it, he could climb ahead of Fontecchio, especially since Miami has the long-term investment in Jovic while Fontecchio is on a one-year deal.
There’s still a reason to think Jovic can force the issue. He showed real touch and production this summer with Team Serbia in the FIBA Basketball World Cup European Qualifiers, averaging 20 points in his four qualifying games. That kind of stretch is exactly what Miami needs to see translate into an actual NBA breakthrough.
For now, Jovic sits at the center of a question the Heat have already created for themselves: was the extension a bet on the future, or a contract they’ll soon be trying to move?

Heat Camp Battle Could Turn Nick Richards Into A Trade Chip
Nick Richards has found himself in the kind of camp fight that can quickly turn into something bigger than a final roster spot. The veteran backup center is on a non-guaranteed contract and is trying to carve out a place with Miami while competing with Bobby Portis and Vladislav Goldin, a setup that gives the Heat flexibility but also puts Richards in a vulnerable position as the roster takes shape.
Around the league, that uncertainty can matter. The 76ers are dealing with a frontcourt injury issue after Ariel Hukportis Achilles injury left them thinner behind Joel Embiid, and a steady reserve big like Richards would fit a clear need. Even so, any path to Philadelphia would hinge on roster choices in Miami and the leagues trade rules, including a restriction on recently signed players that keeps the timeline from being simple. Spoelstras Next Heat Rotation Will Reveal Whos Still Waiting
Erik Spoelstra is using the preseason the way he usually does, as a live laboratory. After Miamis first exhibition game, the Heat coach said many of the players who got run in that opener are expected to be back on the floor against the New Orleans Pelicans, giving the staff another chance to sort through combinations and keep building chemistry with a roster that has several new faces.
The injury list and the absences do trim some of those options. Dru Smith and Keshad Johnson are unlikely to play, while Pelle Larsson and Andrew Wiggins are also expected to sit, which leaves Spoelstra with a rotation picture that is still taking shape. For a team trying to settle roles early, the next preseason look should help show who is moving forward and who is still waiting for a real chance. [Read more 🡒]
Nikola Jovic Just Put Heat Fans On Notice For This Season
Nikola Jovic gave Heat Media Day a little extra spark when he sounded ready to embrace a bigger role off the bench this season. Miami is chasing championship goals again, and Jovic looks intent on being part of that push after flashing enough confidence to suggest he wants more than just a standard reserve season.
The boldest part came when Jovic talked about topping Bam Adebayos recent single-game scoring record, a number that already sits in rare territory after Adebayo moved past Kobe Bryants old mark. Jovics own career high is still 29 points, so the talk is clearly ahead of the production for now, but it was enough to put a little notice on a young player who seems eager to raise his ceiling.
