The Miami Heat finally put an end to their five-game losing streak Thursday night with a 106-95 win over the Brooklyn Nets. But beyond the much-needed victory, what stood out was the emergence of rookie guard Kasparas Jakucionis, who saw his first real stretch of meaningful NBA minutes-and made the most of them.

Jakucionis, Miami’s first-round pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, had technically already logged his NBA debut earlier this month in garbage time against the Clippers. But Thursday night was different. With 4:20 left in the first quarter, head coach Erik Spoelstra turned to the 19-year-old to help stabilize a shorthanded rotation-and the rookie didn’t hesitate.
On his first shot attempt, Jakucionis drained a three-pointer, marking his first official NBA field goal. He finished with three points and an assist in just eight minutes, but the box score doesn’t tell the full story. His energy, poise, and feel for the game stood out, especially in a moment when Miami needed a spark.
“I thought he gave us a good boost,” Spoelstra said postgame. “We’re down some guys right now, and [Kasparas] gives us energy, competitiveness.
He makes things happen. He’s gotten a lot better, a lot more comfortable with what we’re trying to do.”
Spoelstra also noted that the unit Jakucionis was part of missed some shots while he was out there, but emphasized the process was solid-something he values as much as the results.
The Heat were missing key rotation players, including Tyler Herro, Nikola Jovic, and Pelle Larsson, which opened the door for Jakucionis to step into a bigger role. And while his time on the court was limited, it was significant enough that his teammates took notice. After the win, fellow young gun Jaime Jaquez Jr. presented him with the game ball-a clear sign that the locker room appreciated the rookie’s contribution.
Jakucionis was selected 20th overall in June’s draft and came into the league with a reputation as a crafty playmaking guard. That’s a skill set Miami’s been looking to develop behind the scenes, even with Davion Mitchell turning in a strong season. Thursday night offered a glimpse of what Jakucionis might bring to the table in the long run-and maybe even sooner if injuries continue to thin out the roster.

For Jakucionis, the win was the main thing. “I feel good,” he said after the game.

“I feel good, the most important is that we won after the losing streak…that was the most important for today, we all focused for the win tonight…”
“I’m trying to be ready always…”

“The most important [thing] is that we won after a losing streak of quite a lot of games. That was the most important for today.
We all focused on the win tonight, and I think it’s a good way to start building everything up.”
He also mentioned he had a sense he might get some run against Brooklyn, though the message from the coaching staff was consistent: stay ready.
“I’m trying to be ready always and do what I can do-control what I can control,” he said.
It’s the kind of mindset that fits perfectly within the Heat culture. And with the team still navigating injuries and a tough road trip ahead-including stops in Boston and New York-Jakucionis may get more chances to show what he can do. If Thursday was any indication, he’s ready for the moment.
