That is the opening in front of a Giannis Antetokounmpo-led Heat team as the season approaches. New York looks like the club most likely to shape the top of the conference, but its financial picture is getting murkier by the day, and that could matter just as much as what happens on the floor.
The biggest wrinkle is Karl-Anthony Towns. Multiple reports say extension talks between the Knicks and Towns could already be breaking down, and with only one guaranteed year left on his deal, that would be a major issue for New York’s effort to keep its core together.
That isn’t the only contract situation hanging over the Knicks, either. Josh Hart is already eligible for an extension, while Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby can both be extended next summer. Stack all of that together, and New York’s future suddenly looks a lot less straightforward.
The second apron makes the picture even tougher. Under those restrictions, it would be hard to imagine the Knicks holding onto everyone for long. If that reality starts to bite over the next season or two, it could create exactly the kind of opening a team like Miami needs.
For the Heat, that kind of help would come at the right time. Miami still has plenty of work to do building around Giannis, and that remains the first order of business. But if the Knicks lose a step for any reason, even a small one, it could reshape the race at the top of the East.
The conference is already set up to be chased, with every team going after the defending champions. In that kind of field, any crack in the armor of the team sitting near the top gets noticed fast. If New York shows even a hint of weakness, the Heat will be one of the teams ready to pounce.
