Klay Thompsons Mavs Future Just Became A Real Roster Question

Klay Thompson sends a clear message to potential suitors like the Lakers and Heat as his future with the Mavericks hangs in the balance.

Klay Thompson’s next move is already drawing real buzz, and two familiar names keep surfacing: the Lakers and the Heat.

Thompson’s summer has been anything but settled as he and the Dallas Mavericks work through what comes next under new management. A season in Dallas was never guaranteed, and now a trade before the season even starts remains very much on the table. Several teams have shown interest in the veteran sharpshooter, and Los Angeles and Miami are among the clubs most often tied to him.

“My understanding is that Thompson would welcome a return to Los Angeles, where he spent part of his childhood and still owns a home. The Miami Heat are another team frequently mentioned in NBA circles as a potential landing spot for the future Hall of Famer," The Athletic's Christian Clark wrote.

That level of interest has also shaped Dallas’ thinking. The Mavericks reportedly have no plans to chase a buyout with Thompson, largely because of the market forming around him.

“To this point Dallas has not been looking to find a buyout agreement with Klay Thompson…the Mavericks have been very hesitant, to my understanding, of actually moving forward and agreeing to a buyout with Klay Thompson," The Stein Line’s JakeFischer said."This market that is shaping up for him, the fact that there is some L.A. interest, the fact that there is Miami interest, there's probably other teams that have interest in Klay Thompson as well.”

Thompson himself made the kind of statement that keeps contenders listening. When asked about the sort of team he wants to join, he didn’t leave much room for interpretation.

“I want to compete for a Championship, not necessarily win one, but just have the chance to go and try and get another one… I want to play a role on a team that I want to make a deep playoff run,” Thompson said.

That mindset lines up with what the Lakers and Heat can offer. Both teams have made significant moves this offseason and are set up to compete, which only adds to the appeal for a player who still wants to chase the highest level.

Thompson already has four NBA championships on his résumé, but he’s clearly not done trying to add another. For Los Angeles and Miami, that keeps the door open if they can put together a trade that brings in the veteran shooter.

Nikola Jovic Still Has Something Big To Prove In Miami

Nikola Jovic enters the next chapter of his Heat career with real security and real pressure. The Serbian forward signed a four-year, fully guaranteed extension last summer, and his salary is set to climb starting in the upcoming season, a sign Miami still believes there is something worth investing in.

Jovic has long been viewed as a player whose skill set could fit in South Florida, but the promise has been slowed by injuries and uneven defense. He has yet to reach 50 games in a season, and while the Heat still see him as a potential future contributor, the patience attached to that belief may not last forever if the development does not start to match the contract. Andrew Wiggins Could Decide How Dangerous This Heat Team Becomes

Miamis plan for the next few seasons looks increasingly tied to how well Andrew Wiggins fits into the mix. The Heat are expected to lean on the 31-year-old as a major contributor in 2026-27, and his role could matter even more if the roster continues to build around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. A player with Wiggins track record, including a career scoring average of 18.2 points and accolades like Rookie of the Year and an All-Star nod in 2021-22, brings a level of established production that teams usually need when chasing bigger goals.

The bigger question is whether Wiggins can settle in as the kind of third option that changes the shape of this team. Miami is still looking for more star power to complement its top two pieces, and Wiggins sits in that space between proven scorer and potential fit who could make the whole thing work better. If he delivers in that role, the Heats ceiling rises fast, but if he does not, the search for the right balance around Antetokounmpo and Adebayo gets a lot more complicated. [Read more 🡒]

Pat Riley Faces A Heat Decision Fans Will Strongly Debate

The Heat have already reshaped themselves around the arrival of Giannis Antetokounmpo, and the ripple effects keep going. With several familiar faces sent out in deals and Norman Powell gone in free agency, Miami is still looking for the kind of depth that can make a star-heavy roster feel complete, especially on the wing and in the half court.

One path under consideration would cost the Heat a young piece in Nikola Jovic, which is where the debate starts to get interesting. The front office is also weighing a different route that keeps Jovic in place while leaning on the free-agent market for another proven scorer, and for a team trying to balance urgency with long-term flexibility, this could become one of those roster calls fans argue about well after the dust settles.
