Klay Thompson’s next move is already drawing real buzz, and two familiar names keep surfacing: the Lakers and the Heat.
Thompson’s summer has been anything but settled as he and the Dallas Mavericks work through what comes next under new management. A season in Dallas was never guaranteed, and now a trade before the season even starts remains very much on the table. Several teams have shown interest in the veteran sharpshooter, and Los Angeles and Miami are among the clubs most often tied to him.
“My understanding is that Thompson would welcome a return to Los Angeles, where he spent part of his childhood and still owns a home. The Miami Heat are another team frequently mentioned in NBA circles as a potential landing spot for the future Hall of Famer," The Athletic's Christian Clark wrote.
That level of interest has also shaped Dallas’ thinking. The Mavericks reportedly have no plans to chase a buyout with Thompson, largely because of the market forming around him.
“To this point Dallas has not been looking to find a buyout agreement with Klay Thompson…the Mavericks have been very hesitant, to my understanding, of actually moving forward and agreeing to a buyout with Klay Thompson," The Stein Line’s JakeFischer said."This market that is shaping up for him, the fact that there is some L.A. interest, the fact that there is Miami interest, there's probably other teams that have interest in Klay Thompson as well.”
Thompson himself made the kind of statement that keeps contenders listening. When asked about the sort of team he wants to join, he didn’t leave much room for interpretation.
“I want to compete for a Championship, not necessarily win one, but just have the chance to go and try and get another one… I want to play a role on a team that I want to make a deep playoff run,” Thompson said.
That mindset lines up with what the Lakers and Heat can offer. Both teams have made significant moves this offseason and are set up to compete, which only adds to the appeal for a player who still wants to chase the highest level.
Thompson already has four NBA championships on his résumé, but he’s clearly not done trying to add another. For Los Angeles and Miami, that keeps the door open if they can put together a trade that brings in the veteran shooter.
