The Klay Thompson chatter got loud enough this summer that Dallas had to make its position clear.
Despite the noise tying Thompson to the Lakers and, soon after, the Heat, the Mavericks are not talking buyout with the veteran guard. That’s the key point coming out of reporting from NBA insider Brett Siegel, who checked with sources and found Dallas remains open to moving Thompson, just not to letting him walk for nothing.
Siegel wrote, "Amid speculation and people asking, Klay Thompson and the Mavs are not currently negotiating a buyout, sources confirmed to @ClutchPoints. The Mavs are open to trading Thompson, but there have not been active discussions as of today between the two sides on a buyout."
A buyout would give Thompson the freedom to pick his next stop, which is why teams like the Lakers and Heat make sense as landing spots. But it would also leave Dallas empty-handed.
That part matters. Thompson is on an expiring $17.46 million deal, and even at 36, he still carries trade value because of who he’s been: a four-time champion and one of the best shooters the league has ever seen.
Dallas also has the cap setup to be patient. The Mavs are sitting below the luxury tax line and have more than $22.2 million in room before reaching the strict second apron. That gives them a real chance to turn Thompson’s salary into a useful player or a draft asset instead of simply cutting bait.
The interest from the Lakers is easy to understand.
