The Miami Heat spent the summer chasing a roster built to go for it all, and that meant making bold moves around Giannis Antetokounmpo. They opened the offseason by trading for him, then kept pushing for veteran help, adding players like Klay Thompson and Nick Richards while also taking a hard look at Bradley Beal.
Miami’s interest in Beal was real. As Miami Herald reporter Anthony Chiang wrote, “Among the free agents currently available who the Heat has already shown some level of interest in are veteran guard Bradley Beal and veteran forward DeMar DeRozan," Miami Herald's Anthony Chiang wrote. "The Heat has had discussions with the representatives for both players, according to league sources."
The idea was clear: load up on shooting and give Antetokounmpo more space to operate. Beal fit that plan on paper, and when he chose to return to the Los Angeles Clippers, it looked like Miami had missed out on one of its top targets.
“Free agent guard Bradley Beal has agreed to a two-year, $13.2 million deal to return to the LA Clippers, his representative, Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, told ESPN on Thursday night. The deal includes a player option in the second season,” ESPN’s Shams Charania wrote.
But that disappointment now looks a lot different. Beal’s injury history has followed him for years, and he’s already headed into training camp dealing with another issue.
“Bradley Beal won't be available to start training camp. He had successful hip surgery, but during his recovery then had inflammation of his right knee, which the team is monitoring,”
That development makes Miami’s pivot look smarter in hindsight. The Heat got a shot at Klay Thompson instead, and Thompson has been the more durable option for most of his career. In that sense, the Beal miss may have opened the door to a cleaner fit for Miami.
It’s unfortunate for Beal, whose career has been interrupted by injuries, but from the Heat’s perspective, the outcome already looks favorable. Not landing the 14-year veteran elite shooter may end up being a blessing in disguise.
