Heats 0-3 Start Could Force Spoelstra Into A Drastic Lineup Call

Could a high-risk lineup change rejuvenate Miamis faltering season and spark much-needed inspiration on the court?

The Miami Heat are only three games into the season, and Erik Spoelstra is already staring at a starting five that has been badly out of sorts.

After the 0-3 start, one possible answer is hard to ignore: a switch from Klay Thompson to Pelle Larsson. It wouldn’t be the kind of move that instantly fixes everything, and it would come with real risk, but it may be the one realistic adjustment Spoelstra can make that could actually shake things up.

The Heat’s current starting group of Davion Mitchell, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, Bam Adebayo, and Giannis Antetokounmpo has been a disaster through the opening stretch. In 31 minutes together, that lineup has posted a -47.1 net rating and a defensive rating of 150. Small sample or not, those numbers tell the story: the group has been historically bad.

Spoelstra does not have a ton of obvious alternatives. There is no backup point guard ready to slide in for Mitchell, and Bam and Giannis are not going anywhere. Tim Hardaway Jr. has been struggling just as much as Klay or Wiggins, so the usual fixes are not offering much help.

That leaves Larsson as the most realistic shakeup.

He would not give the Heat the same outside shooting threat Klay can provide, and the fit may not be perfect from a schematic standpoint. But this is the kind of move that comes from desperation, and that may be exactly why it deserves consideration.

After Miami’s loss to the Charlotte Hornets, Spoelstra said the team needed to find their "inspiration" to play with the fire they showed in that fourth-quarter comeback on a consistent basis. Larsson could fit into that idea. He was part of the lineup that sparked that rally, and he brings qualities the current starting group may be missing.

He may not supply the same offensive punch or floor spacing as Klay, but he could offer more defense and more playmaking at this point. For a team looking for any kind of jolt, that matters.

It would be a fast and pretty stark move from Spoelstra, especially this early in the season. But with the starting five sputtering and time already ticking, the Heat may not have many other cards to play.

Most expected Larsson to earn a starting role eventually. Few thought it would come this soon.

Heat Just Added A New Pipeline Battle Fans Should Watch

The Skyforce added a guard-heavy class in the 2026-27 NBA G League draft, giving Miami another set of development names to track closely in Sioux Falls. Tyler Cochran went seventh overall, followed by Tyon Grant-Foster at fifteenth and Masai Olowokere at twenty-fifth, a group that brings a mix of college and pro experience to the Heats affiliate.

For Miami, the appeal goes beyond filling out a roster. Each of the three guards arrives with a reputation built around defense and versatility, traits the organization has long valued in its pipeline. How those skills translate once the G League season gets going will be worth watching, especially with the Skyforce once again serving as an important proving ground for future Heat depth. Heats New Core Already Facing Early Pressure To Respond

The early return on Miamis new-look core has been rough enough to raise questions before the season even has a chance to settle in. Through three straight losses, the Heat have been on the wrong end of the scoreboard by wide margins, and the issues have looked familiar in all the wrong ways: trouble on the glass, inconsistent scoring and a defense that has spent too much time chasing games from behind.

Bam Adebayo, Andrew Wiggins and Tim Hardaway Jr. were all brought in or counted on to help steady the rotation, but none has yet provided the kind of impact Miami needs from its key pieces. It is still early, of course, but the Heat are already dealing with the kind of pressure that comes with trying to build chemistry on the fly while the losses pile up and the holes become impossible to ignore. Heat 0-2 Start Fuels Buzz About Another Star Next To Giannis

The Heats 0-2 start has only sharpened the spotlight on a roster that was supposed to look far more imposing after the offseason move for Giannis Antetokounmpo. Miami went all-in to land the former Bucks star in a multi-asset trade, but the early results have fueled the kind of outside chatter that usually comes when a team has already spent big and still looks unfinished.

Now some media speculation is linking Miami to another headline-grabbing name in Kyrie Irving, a reminder of how quickly the conversation can shift around a star-driven team. Any deal would hinge on Dallas being willing to move him and on the Heat finding a package the Mavericks would actually accept, so this is far from a simple fix, but it is the sort of possibility that follows a slow start in a market built to chase more.
