The Miami Heat already made their biggest move of the offseason by landing Giannis Antetokounmpo, but the roster still doesn’t look finished. The front office addressed some bench spots with veteran stopgaps, yet the backcourt remains the area that could keep Miami from feeling truly complete.
That’s why Darius Garland has started to surface as a name worth watching. The 26-year-old point guard has been tied to possible trade talks involving the Los Angeles Clippers, and there’s a real chance they decide moving him is the best way to rebuild their asset base. That possibility has only grown more interesting after the Clippers were stripped of five first-round picks as punishment stemming from the NBA’s investigation into Kawhi Leonard and the organization.
Garland would give Miami exactly what it still needs: another high-end creator next to Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. He’s a two-time All-Star with playoff experience, and he’d instantly raise the ceiling of a roster that already looks built to contend. Even if a deal doesn’t line up right now, that could change quickly once the season starts and the market shifts.
The fit is obvious from Miami’s side. Davion Mitchell has become a reliable piece, but the question hanging over the roster is whether he can really handle the starting point guard job for a legitimate contender. That’s the kind of decision Pat Riley and the front office may have to confront if they want to maximize this group.
Garland wouldn’t come without concerns. His defense is a question mark, and injuries have been part of the picture too.
He played in just 45 games last season and 57 in the 2023-24 campaign. Still, if the opportunity is there, Miami should take a serious look.
If the Heat could somehow put Garland alongside Antetokounmpo and Adebayo, they’d have three real offensive stars and one of the most dangerous trios in the Eastern Conference. Miami is already expected to be back in the mix, but if there’s one spot that could still be upgraded, it’s at point guard. Garland would be a major swing.
