The Miami Heat keep loading up on defense, and their newest addition gives the roster even more bite on that end.
After a 2026 offseason that already brought in Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Heat’s upgrades have naturally drawn attention for what they mean on offense. But the bigger picture is harder to miss now: this group is getting crowded with defenders.
Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo give Miami a fearsome presence in the paint, while Davion Mitchell and Andrew Wiggins add more resistance on the perimeter. Dennis Smith Jr. is the latest name to join that mix.
Smith is getting another NBA shot after spending a couple of years away from the league, and Chris Haynes reported that the former lottery pick is headed to Miami. The fit is obvious on paper. He’s the kind of player who lines up with Heat Culture, and even with Mitchell already in the picture, Smith will have a chance to show what he can do defensively.
That part of his game has never been the question. Smith may not have lived up to the expectations that came with being a lottery pick, but he remains a high-level defender.
He’s also made no secret of how much he’s wanted this opportunity. More than a year ago, he appeared on The OGs podcast with former Heat players Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller and said, "Miami obviously, Bam is here, that’s a childhood friend.
On top of that, being in Miami, I'm here during summertime. I come out here and get my work in; it's easy for me to not get overwhelmed when I'm in Miami," Smith said during that episode of The OGs.
For now, the move is not a lock for a full-time role. Reports have indicated that Smith is on an Exhibit 10 deal, so he still has work to do before this turns into something bigger. If he earns his way onto the roster, though, Miami will have added yet another defender to a group that’s already looking stacked.
