The Miami Heat have spent the offseason piling up recognizable names, but one of Sunday’s quieter moves might be the one with the clearest developmental upside. Miami signed guard Dennis Smith Jr., giving the former lottery pick another shot to carve out a role as training camp opens Tuesday.
The deal comes as the Heat continue to chip away at the edges of the roster. Last week, Miami added former first-round pick Mo Bamba through its G-League affiliate, and earlier this week the team brought in young guard Bez Mbeng.
On Friday afternoon, the Heat also signed Ian Schieffelin to a non-guaranteed Exhibit 10 contract. Smith’s arrival adds another backcourt piece to the mix, though the exact terms of the contract were not immediately announced.
The Heat had already used all of their training camp invites, so the move may have required someone else to be waived.
Smith, 28, entered the league with real buzz after starring as a five-star recruit and spending his lone college season at NC State in 2016-17. The Wolfpack finished 15-17, but Smith stood out enough to go No. 9 overall to the Dallas Mavericks in the 2017 draft.
His first stop in Dallas showed promise. Smith was productive enough to earn a place on the NBA All-Rookie Second Team, even if his scoring efficiency left something to be desired.
Things went sideways after he was included in the 2019 Kristaps Porzingis trade to the New York Knicks. Aside from the 30 games he played right after the deal, Smith faded fast, eventually landing with the Knicks’ G-League affiliate in 2021 before being waived.
From there, his career turned into a tour. Smith spent time with several teams and even went overseas to play for Real Madrid of the Spanish Liga ACB and the EuroLeague in 2025. Earlier this season, he joined the Heat’s G-League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, and apparently did enough to earn a look from Miami now.
For a player who once looked like a cornerstone prospect, this is a chance to reset. The Heat are betting that Spoelstra’s system can squeeze something useful out of a guard who has already shown flashes of real talent.
