Heading into the new season, Miami Heat fans have plenty to be fired up about with the start of the Giannis Antetokounmpo era. But the biggest concern hovering over all that optimism may not be the one most people would guess.
At first glance, Giannis’ health looks like the obvious place to worry. He did miss a career-high 46 games last season, after all.
But that number sits well outside the norm for his career, not inside it. Over 13 seasons, Giannis has missed more than 20 regular-season games only once.
Before last year, he was averaging just 10 missed games per season, which makes it hard to treat durability as the central issue.
The more pressing question is how Giannis will mesh with Bam Adebayo.
That fit is where the real uncertainty lives for Miami. There’s no guarantee it works, and for a team that gave up so much to get Giannis, that matters a lot.
This wasn’t a move made just to get the Heat back in the conversation for one season. Miami is clearly hoping it can carry them for the next half-decade, at least.
If the pairing with Bam doesn’t click and Erik Spoelstra can’t unlock it, that changes everything. It would put a major dent in the Heat’s plans and reshape how this trade is judged down the line.
The concern isn’t hard to understand. Giannis and Bam have enough overlap in their games to raise immediate questions about how they’ll share the floor, and neither player has shown enough consistency as a 3-point shooter to quiet those doubts. That leaves Spoelstra with the job of finding inventive solutions.
And while Spoelstra has earned plenty of trust, there are still real philosophical questions here. The Heat can hope the pieces fit.
They can believe the coaching staff will sort it out. But given what’s on the line, it’s fair for fans to be uneasy about whether Giannis and Bam will be seamless together.
