The first thing worth watching is how Spoelstra talks about using Giannis and Bam Adebayo together. That pairing gives Miami two bigs who can do just about everything.
Both can handle the ball. Both are dangerous in the pick-and-roll.
Bam’s shooting has come far enough that he doesn’t have to camp in Giannis’ space around the rim all night. The obvious concern will be spacing, but the more interesting question is simple: how do you guard this?
There are all kinds of ways to mess with defenses here. Bam could bring the ball up while Giannis screens.
If the defense drops, Bam can attack off the dribble or work from the mid-range. Flip it, and Giannis can handle while Bam sets the screen.
The point is to keep changing the roles so defenses never get comfortable. On the other end, the fit gets even more dangerous.
Spoelstra has already built strong defenses in Miami without this kind of talent, and now he has Bam and Giannis together.
That’s why I’d expect words like versatility and flexibility to come up a lot. Spoelstra probably isn’t going to tip his hand on specifics.
That’s not really his style. But it’ll be telling to hear how he frames the partnership.
Giannis’ first Media Day as a Heat player is another big one. He’s going to get asked about Milwaukee, about his championship legacy, and about the trade that brought him to Miami.
That’s part of the job. Still, the bigger thing is what kind of tone he sets right away.
He’s here because he believes in the organization and wants a challenge. He wants another championship, and that was the message when he was first introduced in Miami.
No one expects him to walk in and start making bold title guarantees. That’s not what Media Day is for. But it would be surprising if he didn’t make his expectations for this team clear pretty quickly.
Bam may be the most interesting voice of all. People are underestimating what he can do next to Giannis.
He has never played alongside anyone as dominant as Giannis, and he’s now paired with another elite DPOY who can guard 1-5. That combination should make them the best defensive frontcourt duo in the NBA, hands down.
It also changes life on offense for Bam. Jimmy Butler was a great player in Miami, but defenses weren’t building a wall around him every night.
Giannis changes the entire geometry. He’ll pull more attention than Bam, which should create cleaner looks for Bam and his teammates.
There should be more room in the middle, more pick-and-pop chances, and more opportunities for Bam to stretch his range.
If you know Bam, you know the answer probably won’t be flashy. He’ll likely talk about winning, sacrifice, and doing whatever the team needs. That fits too.
After an offseason full of speculation, the Heat are finally about to speak for themselves. Media Day won’t answer everything, but it should give us the first real glimpse of a team with a legitimate superstar in Giannis, an All-Star running mate in Bam, and Spoelstra trying to piece it all together.
