The Miami Heat’s clearest path to upgrading their roster may have narrowed to one name: Klay Thompson.
With the free-agent market mostly picked over, the Heat are staring at a short list of options that can actually move the needle around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. DeMar DeRozan and Bradley Beal would make sense on some level, but neither would fully solve the shooting and playmaking questions hanging over the supporting cast.
Thompson, though, is a different kind of swing.
He’s the kind of addition that changes the shape of a roster, and at this stage Miami should be checking every possible route to make it happen. The safest path would be waiting to see whether Thompson eventually gets bought out. But if that never comes, the Heat may need to get more aggressive and see whether a trade package built around Nikola Jovic and perhaps a future pick could get something done.
That would be a major move, but the logic is obvious. After landing Giannis, Thompson would give Miami the kind of elite perimeter weapon that makes the whole first-year build feel more complete. He’d be an encore-level addition, the sort of move that helps sell this team as a real Eastern Conference threat.
And the reason he stands out so much is simple: Thompson is not merely a good shooter. He’s one of the great shooters the league has ever seen, with a career mark of 41 percent from deep on nearly eight attempts a game. That’s the kind of volume-and-efficiency combination that bends defenses and gives a team instant credibility from the arc.
For Miami, that matters. The Heat already have a few underrated shooters on the roster, but Thompson would quiet the complaints about spacing in a hurry. He would bring the exact outside threat this version of the team needs.
If he’s not the answer, the alternatives get shaky fast. Beal would come with risk.
A smaller flier, the kind Miami has taken before with an Alec Burks-type, would feel far less impactful. That’s why the Heat can’t treat Thompson like a luxury.
At this point, he looks like the one realistic addition that can truly alter the outlook. If Miami wants to matter in the Eastern Conference this season, it needs to find a path to Thompson. No matter the cost.
