If Miami’s front office is truly treating Nikola Jovic as untouchable, it could be walking straight into a mistake the Heat fan base knows all too well.
The concern here is simple: if that valuation keeps Miami from putting together a deal for Klay Thompson this offseason, the start of the Giannis Antetokounmpo era could get off to a frustratingly familiar beginning. The Heat have taken heat for years over how highly they’ve priced their own players, and that approach has already blown up star pursuits in the past. It didn’t derail the Giannis deal, but it may already be complicating the next step.
Brett Siegel of Clutch Hoops reported that Miami has backed away from the idea of building a trade package around Jovic. In other words, for now, the Heat do not seem interested in moving the young wing.
“Even though the Heat could get creative with a trade offer revolving around 23-year-old forward Nikola Jovic, this doesn't appear to be a scenario Miami wants to see play out. Jovic is a young talent the Heat have coveted since drafting him 27th overall in 2022, and he is one of the team's only youthful options after trading Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis for Giannis.”
That stance could matter a lot if the Dallas Mavericks would prefer to trade Klay rather than buy him out this summer. If Dallas finds a trade partner elsewhere, Miami’s reluctance to include Jovic could wind up costing it the kind of proven shooter this roster needs.
And that’s the real issue. If it isn’t Klay, it’s tough to see where the Heat are going to find another established scoring piece to make the supporting cast around Giannis look complete.
Still, there’s a reason to keep the skepticism in check. The report comes with the usual grain of salt, and it’s hard to imagine Miami truly refusing to move Jovic if the right deal were there. But if there’s anything to this, it’s exactly the kind of front-office decision that would leave fans shaking their heads.
There’s also another possibility: the Heat may simply be waiting on a buyout. If Klay ends up getting bought out, Miami could chase him without giving up any assets at all, even one as expendable-looking as Jovic. That would be the cleanest route, and the one that could turn a solid offseason into a great one.
But that path is far from guaranteed. The Heat still need one more major move to lock this team in around Giannis, and if holding onto Jovic keeps that from happening, it would send the fan base right back to a very familiar place.

It is the kind of crossover that fits two players who have made a habit of standing out in more than one way. Wembanyama, a two-time All-Star and the 2026 Defensive Player of the Year, also helped push the Spurs to the NBA Finals, while Antetokounmpo has long been one of the leagues biggest names on and off the floor. Whether the matchup ever happens is still an open question, but the idea alone gives Miami a little added buzz while the Heat wait to see how much more of Antetokounmpos personality comes with him.
