The Miami Heat spent the offseason reshaping their roster, and one of the quieter moves may end up carrying more trade value than it first looked like. Veteran center Nick Richards, signed in August to a non-guaranteed deal, is already being viewed as a possible chip if the Heat decide they have a different frontcourt pecking order.
Richards has long been one of those players people expected to break through without quite getting there. Even so, he has remained a reliable rebounder off the bench throughout his career, which is exactly the kind of skill set that can draw attention if a team suddenly needs depth.
Miami’s frontcourt got more crowded when it also brought in Bobby Portis as part of the blockbuster deal with Milwaukee earlier this summer, and Vladislav Goldin is another name who could play well enough to push Richards down the ladder. Still, Richards has the kind of experience that could help him win the backup job before the regular season even begins.
That matters because another team in the East may soon be searching for help at the same spot. The Philadelphia 76ers added former New York Knicks center Ariel Hukporti this offseason, but the 24-year-old suffered an Achilles injury that will keep him out indefinitely, if not for the entire season.
With Joel Embiid expected to miss plenty of regular-season games, Philadelphia needs someone behind him. Adem Bona, the 76ers’ 2024 second-round pick out of UCLA, is on the roster, but he has not shown enough consistency to be viewed as the top answer.
If Richards is still standing after camp and makes Miami’s regular-season roster, he could fit what Philadelphia needs. But the timeline is the catch.
Because he signed recently, NBA collective bargaining rules would keep him from being traded until December 15, or until three months after the signing date. There’s also the possibility that Miami decides Portis is the better backup hybrid power forward-center option and waives Richards instead.
For now, the idea is simple: if the 76ers are still searching for a backup center by the end of the year, Richards could be one of the cleaner fits available. It just won’t happen quickly.

Spoelstras Next Heat Rotation Will Reveal Whos Still Waiting
Erik Spoelstra is using the preseason the way he usually does, as a live laboratory. After Miamis first exhibition game, the Heat coach said many of the players who got run in that opener are expected to be back on the floor against the New Orleans Pelicans, giving the staff another chance to sort through combinations and keep building chemistry with a roster that has several new faces.
The injury list and the absences do trim some of those options. Dru Smith and Keshad Johnson are unlikely to play, while Pelle Larsson and Andrew Wiggins are also expected to sit, which leaves Spoelstra with a rotation picture that is still taking shape. For a team trying to settle roles early, the next preseason look should help show who is moving forward and who is still waiting for a real chance. [Read more 🡒]
Nikola Jovic Just Became A Real Heat Roster Debate
Nikola Jovic has spent most of his time in Miami as more idea than certainty, which is part of what makes the next stretch so interesting for the Heat. The forward signed a long-term extension before last season, but the on-court production has been uneven enough that his role has never quite settled in, leaving the Heat to sort out what kind of player they really have and how much runway he deserves.
Jovics play in the FIBA Basketball World Cup European Qualifiers offered a reminder of why Miami has kept betting on him. He averaged 20 points across four games and showed the kind of scoring pop that can make him harder to ignore, especially with Erik Spoelstra still able to shape the next phase of his development. The questions around Jovic have not gone away, but neither has the belief that there is still another level for him to reach. [Read more 🡒]
Nikola Jovic Just Put Heat Fans On Notice For This Season
Nikola Jovic gave Heat Media Day a little extra spark when he sounded ready to embrace a bigger role off the bench this season. Miami is chasing championship goals again, and Jovic looks intent on being part of that push after flashing enough confidence to suggest he wants more than just a standard reserve season.
The boldest part came when Jovic talked about topping Bam Adebayos recent single-game scoring record, a number that already sits in rare territory after Adebayo moved past Kobe Bryants old mark. Jovics own career high is still 29 points, so the talk is clearly ahead of the production for now, but it was enough to put a little notice on a young player who seems eager to raise his ceiling.
