Will Giannis Antetokounmpo finish his career in Miami?
It’s a question worth asking after his introductory press conference last month, where Antetokounmpo opened the door just enough to make people wonder what comes next.
“It would be important," Antetokounmpo said. "It gives a little bit of stability to my family and kids…nothing is guaranteed in life - you have to earn it…the main goal is to work hard…I gotta work hard, I take nothing for granted for my whole career and I won’t start now. It’s a great compliment by [Pat Riley] but I gotta do my part.”
That said, Antetokounmpo has also made clear he wants to return to the Milwaukee Bucks at some point before he’s done playing. And he has the résumé to justify that feeling.
Over 13 seasons in Milwaukee, he won two MVPs and a championship, delivering the franchise’s first title since the days of Lew Alcindor and Oscar Robertson. That kind of legacy doesn’t fade quickly.
The bigger question is how his time with the Heat unfolds from here. If Miami doesn’t lead to another ring, a return to Milwaukee could make the most sense. But if Antetokounmpo brings a championship - or even multiple titles - to Miami, the conversation changes.
It could.
Meanwhile, Thompson has already settled on his number in Miami.
Thompson wore No. 31 with the Mavericks over the last couple of seasons as a nod to Hall of Famer and three-point specialist Reggie Miller. Before that, he wore No. 11 when he entered the league in the 2011-12 season. That number also lined up with his draft slot, since he was selected No. 11 overall by the Golden State Warriors in the 2011 draft class.
