Giannis Antetokounmpo hasn’t logged a minute for the Miami Heat yet, but he’s already making his presence felt in the room. During a behind-the-scenes look at his first day with the team, Giannis offered a firm vote of confidence for Nikola Jovic, a player plenty of Heat fans have already moved on from.
As Giannis toured the Heat facility, he ran into Jovic and didn’t hold back on the encouragement. The message was simple, direct, and pretty telling about how he sees Jovic fitting in.
“You were playing good. Translates very well to the NBA.
The first couple of weeks, months into the season, the space will be so much more open, and the decisions will be way easier for you. I’m excited bro”
That kind of backing matters because Jovic is not exactly sitting on solid ground with the fan base right now. His standing has slipped, and it’s not just the fans who have questions. Jovic has work to do across the board if he wants to reset the conversation around his game.
A big part of that comes from how last season ended. Jovic had fallen out of Erik Spoelstra’s rotation by the end of the year, and while injuries played a role, the season still wound up looking rough for him overall.
There is at least some reason for optimism, though. Jovic has started the summer on the right note while playing for Team Serbia overseas, and the challenge now is carrying that into Miami.
That’s the real test. It can’t stop with one strong stretch away from the Heat.
If he does manage to turn that momentum into something real this season, it could help more than just his own reputation. A bounce-back year from Jovic would also give Miami another way to unlock the first-year ceiling of the Giannis build.
On paper, the fit makes sense. Jovic has the kind of skill set that could work alongside Giannis and Bam Adebayo, especially with the Heat lacking playmaking options.
But paper only gets you so far. The question is whether Jovic can actually deliver that version of himself on a consistent basis.
Miami has seen flashes before, which is part of why the team handed him an early contract extension and part of why some fans are frustrated now. The talent has shown up in spurts. The consistency hasn’t.
For now, Giannis seems willing to hand Jovic a clean slate. And with the free-agent market dried up, Heat fans may not have a better move than doing the same.
