The Miami Heat are once again in the thick of trade chatter, and this time, the name attached is as big as they come: Giannis Antetokounmpo. With the February 5 trade deadline looming, the Heat have been mentioned as a potential suitor for the two-time MVP, and the buzz is only getting louder.
Former NBA player Rashad McCants has added fuel to the fire, publicly advocating for Miami to make a move for the Greek Freak. McCants didn’t hold back in his pitch, even throwing in a not-so-subtle jab at Milwaukee’s home crowd.
His message? Miami knows how to treat its stars.
McCants was referring to a recent moment of friction between Antetokounmpo and Bucks fans. During a blowout 139-106 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Bucks trailed by as many as 31 in the first half.
In the second half, Giannis tried to spark some life into the team, drawing a foul on Julius Randle. But instead of cheers, he was met with boos from the Fiserv Forum crowd-a rare scene for a player who’s given so much to that franchise.
"You know who don’t boo, no matter what? Miami Heat," McCants said, leaning into the idea that South Florida fans ride with their stars, even through rough patches.
He doubled down with a pointed example, referencing Terry Rozier, who has been under FBI investigation related to sports gambling and has been on indefinite unpaid leave since October. Rozier, who was due to make $26.6 million this season, didn’t exactly light it up when he was on the floor prior to his absence. Yet, as McCants noted, the Heat faithful didn’t turn on him.
“Terry Rozier was out there throwing the ball around, something clearly wasn’t right, and nobody was booing,” McCants said. “We not booing, we cool.
We drunk, it’s hot, we cool. Giannis, Miami, I’m telling you!”
Now, while McCants may be speaking from a player’s perspective with a bit of flair, the idea of Giannis in a Heat uniform isn’t just barbershop talk-it’s on the radar of league insiders.
According to ESPN’s Zach Lowe, the Heat are one of several teams keeping their powder dry ahead of the deadline, potentially holding onto assets in case Giannis decides he wants out. Lowe mentioned the Hawks, Warriors, Lakers, and Knicks as other franchises possibly playing the long game, waiting to see if the Bucks’ franchise cornerstone becomes available-whether at the deadline or in the offseason.
The key factor? Giannis’ contract situation.
He’s just started a three-year, $175.3 million extension with Milwaukee, but if he doesn’t sign another extension this summer, it could signal a shift in his intentions. The Bucks can offer him a new deal, and if he declines, teams like Miami will be ready to pounce.
For now, it’s all speculation. But the Heat are no strangers to star-chasing, and with a front office that’s always looking for the next big swing, don’t be surprised if Pat Riley and company are lurking in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to make their move.
