Giannis Antetokounmpo isn’t pretending the fit with Bam Adebayo will click overnight, but he also isn’t losing sleep over it.
At Heat media day, the Miami star said the two understand there will be an adjustment period as they figure out how to play off each other. The pairing brings obvious defensive force, but it also raises questions on offense because both players do much of their damage near the basket.
“I think it’s going to be easy, but it’s going to take time for sure. Like, it’s not going to look pretty from the beginning. And obviously, a lot of people have expectations about us.”
That much is clear. The Heat’s addition of the two-time MVP gives Adebayo another elite frontcourt partner, and the defensive upside is enormous. Both can guard multiple positions, protect the rim and switch onto smaller players, which gives Miami a ton of flexibility on that end.
Giannis was direct about why he thinks it can work.
“But at the end of the day, I think we both understand, this is year 10, he’s been in the NBA for a decade, this is year 14 for me. We both understand, slowly, slowly, it doesn’t have to look good on the first night. But eventually, when you have two hardworking guys and two guys that do the right things, eventually it’s gonna look good.”
He also pointed to the accountability he expects from both sides.
“I know that he’s gonna be honest with me, gonna tell me the truth, gonna keep me accountable, and it goes both ways. I’m gonna do the same.”
On the floor, the defensive fit is the easy part. The offense is where Miami will have to sort things out, especially with two interior-oriented scorers sharing the same space. Giannis acknowledged that the spacing will matter, and he believes Adebayo’s ability to stretch the floor will help open things up.
“Again, defense will be incredible. Offense, he’s able to space the floor and knock down shots.
I’m going to try and do the same. When you have guys that approach the game the same way, it’s not going to be hard.”
He made it clear that the partnership depends on shared priorities, not ego.
“It’s hard when you have guys who are about themselves. I don’t think he’s about himself.
I don’t think he thinks I’m about myself. I think we’re both here to do a job.”
There will be some growing pains as Miami works through the offensive side of the equation, and Giannis didn’t promise anything pretty right away. But with two experienced stars who expect accountability and value the same things, he’s confident the pairing will settle in.
