Davion Mitchell is heading into a much bigger job with the Miami Heat, and he’s treating it like one. According to Kendrick Perkins, the Heat guard has already gone looking for extra defensive knowledge this summer, reaching out for help from two of the game’s most respected stoppers: Tony Allen and Iman Shumpert.
Perkins brought up the detail while discussing Miami on “NBA Today.” He said the Heat have enough to reach the playoffs, then pointed to the team’s defensive upside.
“What they [the Heat] have is enough to get them to the playoffs,” Perkins began. “Monica talked about their defense.
I mean, think about it. They have four guys who are All-Defensive-caliber players as far as making an All-Defensive team.”
“We think about Bam and Giannis, yes, obviously. But Andrew Wiggins and Davion Mitchell… It’s crazy because we’re bringing up their defense.
But I had literally just gotten a call from Davion Mitchell’s camp asking me about sending him Iman Shumpert’s and Tony Allen’s numbers because he wanted to pick their brains on how to become an even better defender. So think about their mindset going into this.”
That kind of move fits Mitchell’s reputation. The 27-year-old has already built a strong defensive identity and earned the nickname “Off-Night” for the way he hounds opponents. Now, with a larger role waiting for him, he appears determined to sharpen that edge even further.
Shumpert is a logical place to start. He carved out his NBA career as a dependable two-way wing who could handle multiple matchups, and his work against Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson during the Cavaliers’ 2016 NBA Finals run is part of his defensive legacy.
Allen, though, is the bigger name in this conversation. With six All-Defensive selections, he’s long been viewed as one of the best wing defenders in league history, and his approach to locking people up could be especially useful for Mitchell.
The timing matters, too. Miami is set to look very different in the 2026-27 season, with Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo expected to draw the most attention. Giannis’ arrival came after Tyler Herro and several key players departed, and that move pushed Mitchell into the starting point guard spot.
Last season, Mitchell gave the Heat solid minutes off the bench and put up 9.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 1.0 steals per game. But the role ahead of him asks for more, especially as the team’s primary point-of-attack defender and playmaker.
Bam Adebayo has already noticed the work Mitchell has put in this offseason. He praised the guard’s conditioning and training, saying:
“Davion’s not fat anymore. He’s not fat anymore.
He got himself in shape, and I feel like he’s going to have a great season this year. The way he’s working out.
The way he’s treating his body. I feel like he’s going to have a great season.”
That’s a strong endorsement, and it lines up with the bigger picture around Mitchell. Miami needs him to handle more, defend more and organize more. The Heat can only hope the offseason work - and the advice from defenders like Allen and Shumpert - shows up when the season starts.
