A beach photo and a few letters in the sand may have said plenty about Davion Mitchell’s mindset.
On Monday, the Miami Heat guard posted a set of vacation pictures on Instagram, and the final image carried a message drawn into the sand: “M.I.P”. It looked like a clear nod to the Most Improved Player award, a personal target for the Heat’s starting point guard as he heads into a season with plenty of opportunity.
If Mitchell gets there, he’d join rare company in Miami. Only two Heat players have ever won the award: Rony Seikaly in 1989-90 and Isaac Austin in 1996-97.
Mitchell is coming off the most productive stretch of his career as a full-time starter. In 70 games, all starts, he averaged 9.3 points on 49 percent shooting, 2.7 rebounds, 6.5 assists, which was a new career high, and a steal per game. The 28-year-old is expected to stay in the starting lineup, now alongside Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Bam Adebayo.
That setup gives him a chance to keep building as a playmaker. But if he’s going to seriously enter the Most Improved Player conversation, the jump has to go beyond assists.
Mitchell has never been labeled a pure scorer, though he has shown he can give an offense a real lift. As a rookie with the Sacramento Kings in 2021-22, the former lottery pick put up a career-best 11.5 points per game while shooting 41.8 percent. With Antetokounmpo and Adebayo likely drawing heavy defensive attention, Mitchell should have room to attack as a catch-and-shoot threat or create for himself.
He’s also shown he can handle a bigger offensive load when needed. In the Play-In Tournament against the Charlotte Hornets, Mitchell scored 28 points on 50 percent shooting and added four rebounds, six assists, two steals, and a block. His touches increased after Adebayo exited in the second quarter with a lower back injury, and Mitchell helped keep Miami in it before the Heat fell 127-126 in elimination.
Even in defeat, the ball looked good in his hands.
How often Mitchell gets those chances this season is still uncertain, but with the amount of star power around him, there should be enough openings for him to make a difference on a night-to-night basis.
The Heat are viewed as one of the early favorites in the Eastern Conference, and Mitchell’s role will matter in that push. His comfort in Erik Spoelstra’s system should help, and by the account in the source, he may be working harder than anyone on the roster to sharpen his game this offseason.
