The Cavaliers are still hunting for the wing help they never found this offseason, and their latest target looks like the one they want most.
Cleveland has been linked to a few notable names while trying to solve that starting-wing problem. The team first checked on a possible reunion with LeBron James, but the four-time champion ended up choosing the Philadelphia 76ers. After that, the Cavaliers pivoted to Jonathan Kuminga, a deal that has been tied up in a long and messy free-agency process.

Even with Kuminga still unsigned, Cleveland hasn’t stood still. DeMar DeRozan has also surfaced as an option, with ESPN reporting that the Cavaliers were among the teams showing interest in the 17-year veteran.
“As ESPN's Shams Charania reported recently, DeRozan has generated interest from the Heat, Nuggets, Cavaliers and Washington Wizards, serving as a high-profile name, proven scorer and durable option for several teams in need of offensive punch at a team-friendly price," ESPN wrote.
But the newest name at the front of the line is Peyton Watson, and Cleveland is now said to be going hard after him. Watson is a restricted free agent, and the Cavaliers appear to have made him their priority over both Kuminga and DeRozan.
“The Cavaliers are in strong pursuit of Peyton Watson. Cleveland has officially prioritized Watson over Jonathan Kuminga and DeMar DeRozan as their preferred starting wing option. After missing out on LeBron James this summer, Cleveland knows they’re missing another big piece,” Sidery posted.
Watson is 23 and already has championship experience, which makes him an appealing fit for a team still trying to plug a major hole on the wing. His age also gives Cleveland a chance to keep him in place as part of its core for the long haul.
There’s another factor working in the Cavaliers’ favor: a deal for Watson may be easier to navigate than the drawn-out Kuminga situation. That could matter a lot for a team that has spent the offseason searching for a clean answer at a key position.
Watson has earned only $11 million throughout his young NBA career, and Cleveland’s interest suggests the front office sees him as the best blend of age, upside and accessibility among the names on its board.
