The Miami Heat still have room to keep shaping a roster that already changed the league’s conversation this summer, and DeMar DeRozan has quickly become one of the names to watch.
Miami has been tied to DeRozan before, and the buzz around a possible fit hasn’t gone away. ESPN reported that he has drawn interest from the Heat, Nuggets, Cavaliers and Washington Wizards, with the appeal centered on exactly what he still brings: a high-profile name, a reliable scoring track record and a veteran presence available at a team-friendly price.
That’s why Miami keeps coming up as a likely destination. Jake Fischer of The Stein Line said the connection between DeRozan and the Heat has been building for years and pointed to the Heat as the most realistic landing spot.
“Miami Heat have been a Derozan landing spot for years now, there's been so much connectivity between him and the Heat and I do think the Heat seem to be the most likely scenario for DeMar DeRozan right now…Miami is probably his best bet…those other spots really don't have spending power," The Stein Line's Jake Fischer said.
Bleacher Report’s Dan Favale also projected Miami as the team to land him instead of Denver or Cleveland, while making the case for what DeRozan still offers at this stage of his career.
“So much attention is paid to what DeMar DeRozan can't do: hit threes, spend a ton of time off the ball, defend, etc. We need to spend more time appreciating that someone in his late-30s remains a durable walking bucket.
DeRozan has missed 13 combined games over the past three seasons and racked up more than 10 DNPs just twice for his entire career. The absence of meaningful three-point volume works against him, but he's averaged over 20 points per 36 minutes on better than 50 percent shooting inside the arc through each of the past seven seasons,” Favale wrote.
For Miami, the fit is pretty straightforward. After the blockbuster trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Heat are trying to build out a roster with real championship ambition, and another scorer would fit right into that plan alongside Bam Adebayo and Antetokounmpo.
DeRozan has already banked $305 million in career earnings, and if he ends up in South Beach, he’d give Miami another proven shot-maker to lean on.
