Bam Adebayo didn’t hesitate to weigh in on one of the league’s newest high-upside pairings.
During an appearance on The Makeshift Podcast, the Miami Heat star was asked to compare Minnesota’s fresh duo of Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball with the Lakers’ pairing of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Adebayo started by giving Reaves his due after the guard’s breakout season, but when it came time to choose, he leaned toward the Timberwolves.
“That’s tough ’cause you’ve seen Luka and Reaves play,” Adebayo said.
Reaves made a major jump for Los Angeles in 2025-26, averaging 23.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 1.1 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game. That kind of production made the debate a lot more interesting than it would have been a year ago. Even so, Adebayo still gave the edge to Edwards and Ball.
“I’mma say Ant and LaMelo,” Adebayo said. “I feel like they’re going to be exciting for Minnesota… Everything off the court is bound to be hilarious. Like the off-the-court media training, like hilarious.”
That part of the conversation only added to the intrigue around Minnesota’s new backcourt setup. Edwards and Ball should be electric together on the floor, but the off-court jokes are already writing themselves. Philadelphia 76ers star Jaylen Brown even joked the Timberwolves will need to supervise and counsel them.
On the numbers, Edwards brings plenty of firepower. He averaged 28.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.4 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game for the Timberwolves in 2025-26, and he did it without a top-tier facilitator beside him. That changes now with Ball in the mix.
Ball’s own 2025-26 season with the Charlotte Hornets was strong, too: 20.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, 7.1 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.2 blocks per game. Charlotte then dealt the 25-year-old in the summer to Minnesota for Naz Reid, one unprotected first-round pick, three first-round pick swaps, and three second-round picks.
The chemistry has already shown up in preseason, and that only fuels the anticipation for what this partnership can become.
Of course, no one in this discussion is getting picked over Doncic. Adebayo made that clear by noting just how special the Lakers star is.
Doncic posted 33.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, 8.3 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game in 2025-26, won the scoring title, and finished fourth in MVP voting. He also looks to be in the best shape of his life heading into this season.
For now, fans will have to wait to see these combinations in the same building. The Lakers and Timberwolves don’t meet until Dec. 16 in Minnesota, and then they’ll run it back on Dec. 18.
Adebayo was also pushed through a separate “winner moves on” exercise to name the best duo overall, and his answers kept narrowing until he landed on himself and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Along the way, he chose LeBron James and Joel Embiid over Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns, then over Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox. He finally stopped at Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray.
“I got to go Jamal and Jokic ’cause they’ve won,” Adebayo said.
That still left room for the final call, and Adebayo stayed with his own partnership.
“I’mma say us,” Adebayo said. “… I got to.”
Adebayo and Antetokounmpo would be a nightmare defensively, even if there are questions about how it all fits on offense. Antetokounmpo has brushed off those concerns, and Adebayo has made no secret of the fact that he’s chasing his first NBA title with that kind of help beside him. The Heat are not being picked as favorites, but they know the door is there if they can force their way through it.

Heat Weigh Late Roster Move That Could Fix A Bench Problem
The Heat are still sorting through the edges of their roster with the October 19 deadline looming, and Lonnie Walker IV has emerged as one of the more intriguing names in the mix. Walker, who has shown he can put the ball in the basket in both NBA and EuroLeague play, would give Miami another perimeter scoring option at a time when the bench could use a jolt.
Walker is also back on the market after his stint with Denver ended, leaving him once again searching for a way back into the league. For Miami, the appeal is obvious: a low-risk addition with some offensive upside and a chance to strengthen a second unit that has been looking for a steadier spark. [Read more 🡒]
LeBron Just Put Serious Heat Hype Behind Miamis New Look
LeBron James spent a recent episode of his Mind the Game podcast sounding bullish on the Heats direction, and it was the kind of praise that naturally catches Miamis attention. He pointed to the teams offseason work as a real step forward, framing the makeover as more than just headline-chasing and emphasizing the defensive upside that comes with the new group.
Miamis front office has clearly tried to build something different for the 2026-27 season, headlined by the trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo and the additions of Klay Thompson and Tim Hardaway Jr. James comments add another layer to the conversation around what this roster could become, even if the full picture still depends on how all the pieces fit once the season arrives. Heats Giannis-Bam Duo Creates One Huge Question For Spoelstra
LeBron James recently weighed in on Miamis defensive personnel and coaching, and the conversation naturally circled back to Bam Adebayo as one of the teams defining pieces. For the Heat, that matters because Adebayo is no longer being viewed strictly as a paint anchor. His outside shooting and passing have become part of the larger offensive picture, especially on a roster that also includes perimeter help from Tim Hardaway Jr. and Klay Thompson.
What makes the setup intriguing is the fit with Giannis Antetokounmpo, because Miami has the kind of spacing that could open up new ways to use both stars. Erik Spoelstra has stressed coordinated actions between them, and the real question is how far the Heat can take that partnership without making one of its best strengths feel redundant. The concept is there, the personnel is there, and now Miami has to find the version that actually works when the games get tighter. [Read more 🡒]
