For the Miami Heat, the post-Jimmy Butler era puts the spotlight squarely on Bam Adebayo.
Butler’s exit at the 2025 trade deadline changed the shape of everything Miami has done in recent years. Over the last six seasons, the Heat’s biggest playoff pushes have been built around “Playoff Jimmy,” with Adebayo filling the role of defensive centerpiece and secondary scorer.
Now the burden shifts. If Miami is going to keep its championship standard intact, Adebayo has to do more than hold things together - he has to level up as a scorer.
That’s a tall ask, but not an unfamiliar one. Adebayo has already shown he can carry a playoff game when the moment demands it. He’s delivered three standout postseason performances that prove the ceiling is there: 32 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, and a steal against the Boston Celtics on Sept. 25, 2020; 24 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, two steals, and a block against the Philadelphia 76ers on May 5, 2022; and 31 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, four steals, and a block against the Celtics on May 21, 2022.
What Miami needs now is that version of Adebayo over a full series.
The offensive tools are more polished than they were earlier in his career. His midrange game, once a spot that needed work, has become one of the strongest parts of his attack.
He’s also grown into a stretch big, knocking down a career-high 33.3 percent from three-point range last season. That kind of development matters, because it gives the Heat more ways to pressure defenses when the games tighten up.
At 29, Adebayo has become the most complete version of himself yet. He’s a three-time All-Star, a seven-year veteran, and the player Miami leans on for defense, leadership, and structure.
But this season will ask for even more. He has long been the team’s captain and its heart and soul; now he faces what could be the biggest test of his career.
The organization is betting on him. President Pat Riley, head coach Erik Spoelstra, and the rest of the Heat believe Adebayo can grow into the face of the franchise. That belief comes with real stakes, because Miami still sees itself as a contender.
The numbers back up that ambition, at least to a point. ESPN lists the Heat with the 11th-best odds at +3000 to win the Larry O’Brien trophy. The Eastern Conference has gotten stronger, but Miami remains within striking distance.
The path is clear. Adebayo has already shown flashes of playoff takeover ability. Now the Heat need it to show up every night when the games matter most.
