Tua Tagovailoa’s practice day took a turn on Thursday when the Falcons quarterback briefly went to the ground during throwing drills with what appeared to be a back injury.
Josh Kendall of The Athletic reported the moment, and Reggie Chatman Jr. later posted video showing Tagovailoa dropping to the ground for a short stretch while holding his back. He then stood off to the side for the rest of the portion of practice that was open to the media.
Marc Raimondi reported that Falcons QB Cooper Rush said he handled all of the first-team reps on Thursday, which lines up with Tagovailoa not taking part in the team periods after his back tightened up.
That’s especially notable because Tagovailoa already missed the first week of training camp with back spasms.
He had been named the Falcons’ Week 1 starter, with Michael Penix Jr. still working his way back to full health after an ACL injury, though reports had suggested Tagovailoa could be on a “short leash.”
There has also been talk that he could be let go if he winds up benched for performance over the first few games, but now even his Week 1 status is looking uncertain.
Tagovailoa, 28, entered the league as the No. 5 overall pick out of Alabama in 2020 by the Dolphins. His rookie deal was four years and $30,275,438, including a $19,578,501 signing bonus, and he made a base salary of $1,010,000 in the final year of that contract.
Miami exercised his fifth-year option for 2024 at $23,171,000, then later signed him to a four-year contract worth up to $212 million with $167 million guaranteed. The Dolphins released Tagovailoa this offseason, and he then signed a one-year deal with the Falcons.
In 2025, Tagovailoa played in 14 games for the Dolphins and completed 67.7 percent of his passes for 2,660 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions.
