Packers Eye Quarterback Trade After Losing Key Player to Dolphins

The Packers are eyeing Colts' QB Anthony Richardson for a potential trade, aiming to fill the backup role after Malik Willis' move to Miami.

The Green Bay Packers are on the hunt for a new backup quarterback following Malik Willis's move to the Miami Dolphins. As soon as the legal tampering window opened, the Dolphins snapped up Willis with a three-year, $67.5 million contract, including a hefty $45 million guaranteed. Despite only three starts over two seasons with the Packers, Willis managed to rack up 972 passing yards, 261 rushing yards, and nine total touchdowns-enough to catch Miami's eye.

With Willis out of the picture, Green Bay is exploring options, and one intriguing possibility is Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson. The Colts have given Richardson, the No. 4 pick from the 2023 NFL Draft, the green light to seek a trade. ESPN’s Stephen Holder notes that while no deal is imminent, the Packers are a team to watch in this scenario.

Richardson is likely drawn to the idea of working with a proven quarterback developer, and Green Bay’s Matt LaFleur fits that bill. The Packers might only need to part with a Day 3 draft pick to bring Richardson into the fold.

NFL.com’s David Carr previously highlighted Green Bay as an ideal destination for Richardson, especially after witnessing Willis's growth under LaFleur. If Richardson joins the Packers, he'd have the opportunity to learn from both LaFleur and starting quarterback Jordan Love. With his first-round talent, Richardson could very well rejuvenate his career in the right system.

Given Willis's success in Green Bay, it's not far-fetched to imagine Richardson thriving there as well, potentially setting the stage for his own comeback story.
