The Miami Dolphins find themselves at a pivotal moment, reshaping their roster under new head coach Jeff Hafley and GM Jon-Eric Sullivan. One can't help but wonder how different things might look if the previous regime had opted to trade star receiver Jaylen Waddle sooner. Yet, holding onto Waddle may have been a wise move, considering the potential backlash from fans.
Interim GM Champ Kelly had a tempting offer from the Dolphins' AFC East rival, the Buffalo Bills, at last year’s trade deadline. The Bills were eager to acquire Waddle, offering a first-round pick in the 2027 draft and a Day 2 pick in 2026.
Despite the appeal, Miami decided it wasn’t enough, especially for a trade within the division. They wanted a 2026 first-round pick to consider moving Waddle, a decision that involved former head coach Mike McDaniel.
Imagining the Dolphins' offense without Waddle, especially with Tua Tagovailoa struggling last season, paints a grim picture. Ironically, after rejecting the Bills' offer, Miami delivered a standout performance against them in Week 10, cruising to a 30-13 victory. That win, however, came with a roster and coaching staff that have since been overhauled.
The Dolphins have signed Malik Willis, yet there's speculation they might not see him as their long-term solution at quarterback. This season seems to be about building depth and laying a young foundation, possibly setting the stage for a major move next offseason. The additional first-round pick in 2027 could have been instrumental in drafting a top QB or a potential star from a promising rookie class.
The Bills, on the other hand, might be feeling some regret. They ended up with the 26th overall pick and later traded for DJ Moore, giving up the 60th pick. With the Broncos snagging Waddle just a few spots later, Buffalo GM Brandon Beane might be wishing for a do-over on that decision.
