Miami Dolphins Linked to Two-Time Pro Bowl QB in Stunning Move

Geno Smith eyes a potential Miami Dolphins revival as the team searches for a quarterback solution post-Tua Tagovailoa era.

The Miami Dolphins are facing a pivotal moment as they prepare to release starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa at the start of the new league year. This move leaves a significant gap in their roster, with only Quinn Ewers and Cam Miller currently in the quarterback room. The Dolphins now have a pressing need to bring in either a seasoned veteran through free agency or a promising draft pick to vie for the starting position.

Rumor has it, according to SNY's Connor Hughes, that the Dolphins have their sights set on Malik Willis to lead the team. However, an intriguing twist in the tale is that Geno Smith, the former Las Vegas Raiders quarterback, is reportedly keen on heading to South Florida in 2026.

Smith, now 35, was originally drafted by the New York Jets in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft out of West Virginia. His early years in the NFL were challenging, with four tough seasons with the Jets followed by stints with the New York Giants and the Los Angeles Chargers. It wasn't until he joined the Seattle Seahawks that he truly found his stride, spending six productive seasons there.

During his tenure with the Seahawks, Smith started 52 games, achieving a 28-24 record. He completed 68.5% of his passes, amassing 12,961 yards, 76 touchdowns, and 36 interceptions. His performance earned him two Pro Bowl selections and a Comeback Player of the Year Award, marking a remarkable turnaround in his career.

Last offseason, Smith was traded to the Raiders, where he struggled with a 2-13 record as a starter in 2025. Given Miami's limited cap space and Smith's age, coupled with a challenging recent season, he might be an affordable option. Smith could serve as a valuable one-year stopgap, providing the Dolphins with the experience and leadership they need as they navigate this transitional phase.
