Malik Willis Gave Bengals A Read Dolphins Fans Will Hate

Deck: Bengals safety Jordan Battle exposes Malik Willis's "tell," leading to a game-changing defensive strategy and ending Cincinnati's losing streak.

The Cincinnati Bengals got exactly what they needed in Miami, and Jordan Battle was right in the middle of it. The safety said during the week that the defense had spotted a Malik Willis “tell,” and when the game rolled around, Battle turned that scouting into two interceptions and a major role in a three-turnover day for Cincinnati.

Battle explained that Willis gives away the throw with a small motion before releasing the ball.

"He has a little slight little tap before every throw though, so I feel like we could use that as a key to break on the ball," Battle said. "He likes to tap the ball before he throws it, or he takes his hand off, and that that gives the read the break."

Jordan Battle on Malik Willis: “He has a little slight little tap before every throw though, so I feel like we could use that as a key to break on the ball. He likes to tap the ball before he throws it, or he takes his hand off, and that that gives the read the break.

He's obviously dangerous with his feet. We know we got to be alert for that.

Third and longs, they will run quarterback draws, and in the passing game, he will extend plays. So we got to be good downfield.

DBs are plastering, so we got to be alert for that. He will take chances.

We just got to be on, be alert on guys where they line up.”

Not everyone loved Battle putting that out there publicly, since it gave Willis a chance to clean things up. But the Bengals linebacker?

safety? didn’t need to backtrack.

Cincinnati’s defense showed it had the read.

The first interception came early in the second quarter with the Bengals already leading 14-7. Battle jumped on a tipped pass and came away with the takeaway.

Just five minutes later, he struck again. This time, Willis tried to make a throw while moving and across his body, and Battle made him pay with another pick.

Battle’s day pushed him to three interceptions on the season and nine for his career. He’s now tied for the league lead in picks in this young NFL season, a strong start for a safety who turned film study into production in a hurry.

Dolphins Rebuild Is Putting These Two Young Guards Under The Microscope

Miamis early-season stumble has only sharpened the focus on the interior of its offensive line, and two young guards are drawing most of the attention. With the team off to an 0-4 start, the Dolphins are treating the development of Kadyn Proctor and Jonah Savaiinaea as part of the bigger rebuild, looking for signs that the group can grow into something sturdier as the season goes on. Both have flashed enough to keep the staff interested, even if the results have been uneven.

Proctor has been the more eye-catching case in terms of raw ability, while Savaiinaea has shown the cleaner trajectory after settling into his second year. The evaluations have not been uniform, but the larger view remains encouraging, with coaches and analysts seeing enough progress to believe both players can matter to Miami down the line, even as the week-to-week scrutiny keeps getting tighter. Dolphins Fans Will Love Whos Bringing The Energy Sunday

Miamis matchup with Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon will have a different feel in the booth, with FOX turning to Eric Collins and Mark Schlereth for the call. Collins, best known as the play-by-play voice of the Charlotte Hornets, has already built a reputation for bringing plenty of energy to whatever he covers, and that has made him an appealing name for fans who like their broadcasts with a little extra life.

Collins also has at least some recent NFL experience, having called a game last season, which only adds to the curiosity around this assignment. He may not be FOXs top announcing duo, but Dolphins fans have already shown plenty of interest in hearing him handle another one of their games, and this one should have no shortage of attention before the opening kickoff. Dolphins Defense Just Got A Tougher Test In Cincinnati Matchup

The Dolphins defense was already facing a difficult road task in Cincinnati, and the Bengals got a welcome dose of good news before kickoff. JaMarr Chase and Tee Higgins both returned to practice after injuries in the previous game, were listed as questionable, and their status immediately shaped the weeks buildup around a Cincinnati passing game that depends heavily on both receivers.

Chase had been working through concussion protocol, while Higgins was dealing with groin and neck issues, leaving their availability as the main storyline entering the matchup. Their presence gives the Bengals a much more complete offensive look, and for Miami it means a secondary that was preparing for a potentially thinner challenge now has to deal with two of the leagues most disruptive targets.
