The Miami Dolphins are beginning to shape their new-look coaching staff, and one of their first moves in the offensive coordinator search points toward a rising name in quarterback development: Jerrod Johnson.
According to reports, the Dolphins have officially requested an interview with Johnson, currently the quarterbacks coach for the Houston Texans. This marks the first known OC interview request by Miami since the organization brought in Jon-Eric Sullivan as general manager and tapped Jeff Hafley to take over as head coach.
Johnson, 37, has quietly built an impressive coaching resume over the past several years. After a playing career that saw him bounce around several NFL rosters-including stops with the Steelers, Seahawks, Bears, Ravens, and Cowboys-Johnson transitioned to coaching in 2017 through the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship with the San Francisco 49ers. He later held a similar fellowship role with the Colts in 2019, laying the groundwork for what’s become a fast-rising trajectory.
By 2020, Johnson had earned a promotion to offensive quality control coach with Indianapolis, a role that often serves as a proving ground for young coaches looking to break into the strategic side of the game. From there, he joined the Minnesota Vikings as assistant quarterbacks coach under Kevin O’Connell, where he continued to build his reputation as a sharp offensive mind with a strong rapport with signal-callers.
In 2023, the Texans brought Johnson on board as their quarterbacks coach-a move that’s paid dividends. Working with young QB talent in Houston, Johnson has been part of a staff that’s helped accelerate the development of one of the league’s most promising offensive units.
For the Dolphins, the interest in Johnson signals a desire to bring in a coach who not only understands quarterback mechanics and modern offensive concepts, but who also has a track record of connecting with players and helping them grow. With a new GM and head coach in place, Miami appears to be targeting a fresh, forward-thinking approach to its offense-and Johnson fits that mold.
While it remains to be seen whether he’ll land the job, there’s no question Johnson is a name to watch. His coaching journey-from undrafted quarterback to one of the more intriguing young minds in the league-makes him a compelling candidate for any team looking to retool its offense from the ground up.
