Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross Stuns Crowd While Introducing New Head Coach

At a high-stakes press conference introducing the Dolphins' new head coach, owner Stephen Ross's momentary lapse stole the spotlight from a pivotal franchise decision.

Jeff Hafley's Dolphins Era Begins With Slight Stumble at the Podium, But Eyes Stay on the Future

The Miami Dolphins officially introduced Jeff Hafley as their new head coach on Thursday morning, but the spotlight briefly shifted from the new hire to the man doing the introducing-team owner Stephen Ross.

Ross, 85, took the podium to welcome Hafley, who steps into his first head coaching role after serving as the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator for the past two seasons. It was a moment meant to mark a fresh chapter for the franchise, just days after parting ways with Mike McDaniel following a 7-10 season.

But as Ross began his remarks, things took an unexpected turn. While outlining the team’s exhaustive coaching search, the longtime owner momentarily stumbled when trying to recall Hafley’s name.

“The enthusiasm, the knowledge, the background, erm…” Ross said, pausing to glance down at his notes before continuing, “...erm... Jeff stood out amongst them all.”

It was a brief hiccup in what should have been a straightforward introduction, and while it sparked some chatter online, the focus quickly returned to the bigger picture-Miami’s commitment to a new direction under Hafley’s leadership.

Despite the awkward moment, Ross was clear about the organization’s process and confidence in their choice. “We started early so we could really be very thorough in our search in trying to find the right people to lead this organization,” he said.

“We had to go out and find a coach. We were really, totally thorough and totally objective.

After interviewing, talking to people, they were all really great candidates… I am very happy to be standing today knowing that we got who we wanted and the rest of the teams are still looking.”

For Hafley, the moment marked a significant milestone in his coaching career. After years of climbing the ranks-from college coaching stints to his recent NFL experience in Green Bay-he now takes the reins of a franchise looking to reestablish itself in the AFC.

The Dolphins’ decision to move on from McDaniel after a disappointing season signaled a desire for a new identity, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. Hafley, known for his aggressive and disciplined defensive schemes, brings a fresh mindset and a reputation for player development. His work in Green Bay helped turn around a struggling unit, and Miami’s front office is clearly betting on him to do the same in South Florida.

While the press conference may have had its unscripted moment, it’s the work ahead that will define Hafley’s tenure. The Dolphins have talent on both sides of the ball, but consistency and execution have been elusive. Hafley’s challenge will be turning that potential into results-and fast.

As for Ross, the longtime owner remains a central figure in the franchise’s direction. Since taking over the Dolphins in 2009, he’s invested heavily in both the roster and infrastructure, including a major renovation of Hard Rock Stadium. While Thursday’s name slip drew some laughs and social media jabs, others were quick to defend Ross, noting his continued involvement and commitment at an age when many would’ve stepped away.

In the end, introductions only last a moment. What comes next-for Hafley, for Ross, and for the Dolphins-is where the real story begins.
