Dolphins Joint Practices Could Expose A Critical Readiness Test

As the New York Giants gear up for joint practices with the Miami Dolphins, Darius Slayton and Deonte Banks face pivotal battles to secure their starting positions amidst an evolving roster.

The Giants are heading into their joint practices with the Dolphins on Thursday, and a pair of familiar names are suddenly under real pressure to keep their starting jobs.

Darius Slayton at wide receiver and Deonte Banks at cornerback came into camp as established parts of the roster. Now, with the team moving from controlled work at The Greenbrier to live reps against another NFL opponent in South Florida, both are being pushed by newer, more versatile competition.

At receiver, the Giants have built a deeper room this offseason, according to ClutchPoints. Malik Nabers is still the clear top option when healthy, but there’s more behind him now.

Darnell Mooney brings polished route running from different spots, Calvin Austin III adds speed in the short and intermediate game, and rookie third-round pick Malachi Fields has forced his way into the conversation with a strong camp. Fields also made noise in the preseason opener against the Minnesota Vikings with a contested touchdown catch that earned him a spot on PFF’s Rookie Team of the Week.

That puts Slayton in a different kind of fight. He has long made his living with vertical speed and experience, and that still matters.

But the staff under John Harbaugh seems willing to lean into a more flexible rotation. Fields’ size and ability to win contested catches give the Giants another look they didn’t have before.

If Slayton can’t separate consistently against Miami’s defensive backs this week, the team could start viewing him more as a rotational deep threat than an every-down starter.

Banks is in a similar spot on the back end.

The former first-round pick has the length and athleticism teams want on the outside, but the Giants have made the room a lot tougher. They signed Paulson Adebo and Greg Newsome II, then drafted Colton Hood in the second round.

That group raised the bar immediately. Banks has still earned first-team reps at different points this summer, according to reports from A to Z Sports and The Athletic, but inconsistency on intermediate routes has remained an issue.

Now comes the cleaner test. Joint practices will show whether Banks can handle different route combinations and finish plays once the ball is in the air.

Hood has been contesting throws aggressively in team periods, and Newsome gives the Giants another veteran option. With that many moving parts, Banks can’t assume the starting spot is safe.

The staff’s message has been consistent all summer: performance matters more than reputation. The Giants aren’t looking for a makeover. They’re looking for the players who give them the best chance to win in September.

For Slayton, that means proving his downfield ability still separates him from the younger receivers. For Banks, it means turning the physical tools into steady coverage.

Neither player is out of the picture after a few uneven stretches. Both have had enough good moments to keep this battle alive.

But with one joint practice Thursday in Miami Gardens and the preseason game against the Dolphins on Saturday, the next round of evidence is here. The depth chart is going to be decided by what happens on the field, not by what happened before camp.

Dolphins Rookie Will Kacmarek Is Creating A New Offensive Question

The Dolphins came out of the 2026 draft with a pair of rookies who have already drawn good early reviews in camp and preseason, with tight end Will Kacmarek and wide receiver Caleb Douglas both making noise. For Miami, the more immediate intrigue has centered on Kacmarek, whose work in the preseason has suggested he can be more than a developmental name at the back end of the roster. His blocking has stood out, and for a team always looking for ways to keep the offense flexible, that alone makes him worth watching.

Kacmareks ability to handle the dirty work has started to open up a bigger question about how the Dolphins might use him if he keeps trending the same way. A tight end who can contribute as a run blocker and survive in protection can change the way an offense builds personnel groupings, especially in a system that values matchup advantages. Miami does not need to rush the answer, but Kacmarek has already made it difficult to ignore the possibilities. [Read more 🡒]

Tua Finally Opened Up About The Dolphins Move That Changed Everything

The offseason departure of Tua Tagovailoa marked one of the more jarring Dolphins storylines, especially after Miami moved on from him and brought in Malik Willis to fill the quarterback spot. Tagovailoa recently spoke publicly about how difficult the release was, and he said he leaned on advice from former coach Nick Saban as he processed the change.

Now with the Atlanta Falcons, Tagovailoa is trying to reset his career in a new environment while competing for the starting job. The opportunity brings a fresh path forward, but it also keeps his Miami exit in focus, especially for a Dolphins team that made a hard pivot at the most important position on the field. Zeek Biggers Is Suddenly In The Middle Of Miamis DT Battle

The Dolphins spent the 2025 draft adding three defensive tackles, bringing in Kenneth Grant, Jordan Phillips and Zeek Biggers as part of a clear effort to deepen the middle of the defense. Grant and Phillips arrived with the sort of profile that naturally draws attention, but Biggers has moved into a more visible role as training camp has unfolded, giving Miami another young body in a position group that is suddenly worth watching closely.

Biggers has started to separate himself because of the way he has fit into the mix, showing the kind of flexibility that can matter in a defense looking for answers up front. Miamis tackle room is still sorting out which players will claim the biggest jobs, and Biggers has become part of that conversation in a hurry, alongside two other rookies who are all trying to carve out a path to meaningful snaps.
