Dolphins Hit Early Injury Snag As Preseason Decisions Get Tough

The Miami Dolphins face a challenging preseason kickoff as injuries create openings for emerging talent to shine.

The Miami Dolphins are heading into their first preseason game on Friday with several injury situations still hanging over the roster, and head coach Jeff Hafley laid out the latest update after the team opened practice in Miami Gardens on Monday morning.

Zane Gonzalez is expected to be week-to-week, while JuJu Brents is likely to miss this week of work. Hafley said Brents’ issue does not appear to be a long-term concern, but he still expects him to stay out for now.

“I would say Zane [Gonzalez - kicker] will be week-to-week. JuJu [Brents], I don’t think JuJu will practice this week, but I don’t think it’s going to be anything long term. But if I wanted to play it cautious, I would say that JuJu will be out this week.”

Hafley also said Clelin Ferrell is set to miss a few weeks and will not be on the field Monday. Kevin Coleman is not expected back this week, either.

Ben Sims is getting closer, though Hafley doesn’t believe he’ll practice this week. Dante Trader is in the same boat.

“[Clelin Ferrell] will be [out] a few weeks. Yeah, he will not be practicing today.

He’ll be a few weeks… For [Kevin] Coleman, I don’t expect him this week. [Ben] Sims [is] getting close.

I don’t think he’ll practice this week… Dante [Trader], I don’t think will practice this week either. They’re getting close.

Hopefully next week.”

For a young roster still sorting itself out, the injuries are hardly ideal. At the same time, they create openings for younger players to get meaningful reps and make their case before the team trims the roster at the end of the month.

Dolphins Camp Suddenly Has A Bigger Problem Than Early Chippiness

The Dolphins got a little edge at their training complex practice, where the usual camp friction showed up in one-on-one drills and the new faces kept making their first impressions. Ahmari Harvey and Tanner Wall were both on the field for their first workout with Miami, while quarterback Malik Willis put together a solid showing and Quinn Ewers had a tougher day.

The bigger concern, though, came on the defensive side, where the list of bodies shortened before practice was over. Willie Gay Jr. and Josh Uche both exited early, and Zach Sieler did not fully participate, turning what began as a fiery session into one that left the Dolphins watching their depth a lot more closely than they likely wanted this early in camp. Dolphins Kicking Battle Just Took A Turn Fans Didnt Expect

The Dolphins kicking competition took a sharp turn this week when Zane Gonzalez landed on injured reserve, changing the shape of a battle that had already been worth watching. Miami had brought Gonzalez in with an eye on the 2026 season, and his experience bouncing around the league made him a logical name to keep in the mix as the team searched for stability at the position.

Miami also made a pair of roster moves around the decision, signing cornerback Nick McCloud and waiving running back Anthony Hankerson. For now, the bigger question is what the kicking picture looks like next, because Gonzalezs path back this season is no longer in his hands unless the Dolphins choose a very specific route.
