Dolphins Can Push Jets Coaching Drama To Another Level

Amid persistent rumors and pressures, Jets coach Aaron Glenn faces a pivotal moment with his job on the line ahead of the game against the Dolphins.

The Jets’ next game may say plenty about Aaron Glenn’s future, but for now the message from inside the building is clear: New York isn’t itching to move on.

That was the gist of Connor Hughes’ Thursday mailbag for SNY, which pushed back on the idea that Glenn is already headed for an early exit despite the chatter connecting the Jets to Mike Tomlin. From late August into early October, reports circulated that Woody Johnson could consider replacing Glenn with the former Steelers coach and current NBC analyst in January 2027 if the season goes off the rails again.

Hughes said the situation is not nearly the same as the Robert Saleh fallout. “The Jets don’t want to fire Glenn,” Hughes wrote.

“That’s a major part of this. This isn’t the Robert Saleh situation, where he had to convince Woody Johnson he should keep his job.

Johnson was looking for a reason to let him go. With Glenn, he needs to provide undeniable proof he should be let go.”

Johnson moved quickly on Saleh in October 2024, firing him about 48 hours after the Jets dropped to 2-3. Saleh finished his run at 18-33 over three seasons, yet the timing still caught plenty of people off guard.

Glenn’s own ledger isn’t much kinder right now. The Jets fell to 2-4 on Oct. 18, and his record with the team sits at 5-18. Hughes also pointed to the offense, noting that the offseason hire of Frank Reich as offensive coordinator has not gone well.

“There’s evidence mounting against [Glenn], sure,” Hughes continued. “The Jets' end-of-half dysfunction (outscored 100-6 in two seasons), unreadiness, and new staff that looks as bad as the old one (Frank Reich) aren’t feathers, but still, he’s going to get the benefit of the doubt.”

That benefit won’t last forever. The Jets host the 0-5 Dolphins on Sunday, and DraftKings Sportsbook had New York as a 4.5-point favorite as of Thursday morning. Hughes said the conversation around Glenn could shift sharply if the Jets slip to 2-5.

“Where I genuinely believe things take a stark turn against him is if the Jets lose to the Dolphins this weekend,” Hughes added. “That team is bad - really bad. If they can’t beat them … the sky will start to fall.”

Whether that happens could go a long way toward shaping how Johnson views the state of the Jets’ coaching staff.

Dolphins Bye Week Put Jeff Hafleys Biggest Defensive Problem Under Pressure

The bye week gives Miami a little breathing room, but it also puts a glaring defensive issue front and center: the pass rush. Through the first part of the 2026 season, the Dolphins have managed only four sacks, and every one of them came in Week 4 against the Vikings. For a defense that has struggled to force quarterbacks off their spots, that kind of production is hard to ignore.

Jeff Hafley has already acknowledged the problem, and the next stretch of practice figures to be about more than just rest. The defense has given up a high passer rating and too many third-down conversions, so the staff is looking for ways to create more disruption and make quarterbacks feel it earlier in the down. How Miami chooses to attack that issue coming out of the break could say plenty about whether this group can turn a weakness into something more manageable. [Read more 🡒]

Dolphins Suddenly Need Rodney McGraw To Prove He Belongs

The Dolphins have turned to Rodney McGraw for real depth help on the edge after injuries thinned out the room and the team moved on from Clelin Ferrell. McGraw, who was already in the building on the practice squad before getting added to the 53-man roster, has been around the system long enough to know what is being asked of him, and Miami is now asking for more than just spot duty.

Defensive coordinator Sean Duggan has liked what he has seen from McGraws effort and physicality, but the next step is turning that profile into dependable game-day production. McGraw has logged 53 snaps this season, and with the Dolphins in need of bodies and pass-rush help, his chances to carve out a larger role are suddenly much better than they were a week ago. Dolphins Finally Get Two Weapons Back For A Stalled Offense

The Dolphins are set to get a little more help for an offense that has been searching for rhythm. Caleb Douglas and Jaylen Wright are both expected to return for the upcoming game against the Jets, giving Miami a chance to add some much-needed speed and flexibility after weeks of shuffling around injuries.

Douglas has been sidelined since a Week 2 ankle injury, while Wright has been working back from a foot issue. Their presence should help the passing game in particular, and for a Dolphins offense that has stalled at times, simply having two more healthy options available could matter just as much as any tactical adjustment.
