Adam Gase might be making his way back to the NFL sidelines - this time in Los Angeles.
According to reports, Gase has emerged as a potential candidate to join Jim Harbaugh’s new-look Chargers staff as an offensive assistant. It’s a name that certainly raises eyebrows. Gase hasn’t coached in the league since 2020, but his resume is long, winding, and full of high-level experience - the kind of background that could be valuable in a supporting role.
At 47, Gase is no stranger to the NFL grind. He got his start with the Detroit Lions in 2003 as a scouting assistant, cutting his teeth in the front office before transitioning to on-field coaching. After five years in Detroit, he spent a season with the 49ers in 2008, continuing to build his reputation on the offensive side of the ball.
His big break came in Denver, where he joined the Broncos as a wide receivers coach and eventually rose to offensive coordinator - a stretch that coincided with some of Peyton Manning’s most prolific seasons. Gase’s offensive acumen during that time earned him plenty of buzz, and it wasn’t long before head coaching opportunities came calling.
After a one-year stint with the Bears, Gase landed his first head coaching job with the Miami Dolphins in 2016. He led the team to a playoff appearance in his first season, but consistency proved elusive.
The Dolphins let him go after three seasons, and he quickly resurfaced as the head coach of the New York Jets. That tenure lasted two years before the Jets opted to move in a different direction following the 2020 season.
Since then, Gase has been out of the NFL spotlight, but his name still carries weight in coaching circles. And now, with Jim Harbaugh assembling a staff to help shape the future of the Chargers, Gase’s experience - particularly on offense - could be an asset.
While nothing is official yet, the potential pairing is fascinating. Harbaugh is known for building strong, cohesive staffs with a mix of personalities and backgrounds. Bringing in someone like Gase, who’s seen the game from multiple angles - from position coach to head coach - would add another layer of experience to the room.
It remains to be seen whether this reunion with the NFL will materialize. But if it does, Adam Gase could find himself back in the mix, helping shape an offense in Los Angeles that’s looking to take the next step under Harbaugh’s leadership.
