49ers Undefeated Buzz Just Ran Into A Much Tougher Reality

Despite a thrilling start and impressive play from Brock Purdy, the 49ers face mounting challenges that make matching the 1972 Dolphins' perfect season an uphill battle.

The 49ers may be unbeaten right now, but the road to 17-0 is already lined with trouble.

San Francisco backed up its national TV stage in a 23-17 Monday Night Football win over Dan Quinn's Washington Commanders, and the finish had plenty of punch - rookie Romello Height blew up Jayden Daniels with a game-ending sack. Brock Purdy also carved out a spot in NFL history in the first quarter, another reminder that he’s earning his place among the league’s top passers.

Still, the schedule is about to ask a lot more of Kyle Shanahan’s team. Week 7 sends the 49ers to Atlanta to face Bijan Robinson and the Falcons, who dropped a close one to the Chicago Bears in Week 6. That trip opens the next stretch of a season that could, in theory, keep San Francisco on a perfect track.

The 1972 Dolphins still own the league’s gold standard, and if the 49ers were to run the table, they’d become the first team since Don Shula’s Miami group to finish undefeated, a run that went from 14-0 to a Super Bowl title and a 17-0 finish. But the reality is that San Francisco has too many hurdles ahead to feel comfortable about that chase.

Atlanta is followed by a Week 8 home game against the Las Vegas Raiders, a matchup that could turn into a trap if the injuries keep piling up. The 49ers already lost key wideout Mike Evans to an Achilles issue against Washington, and that comes on top of the damage already done to the receiving room.

Evans has been a reliable target for Purdy, but he’s now carrying a lot of wear after previously dealing with “stabbing pain” in his ribs. Deebo Samuel was ruled out against the Commanders because of a hamstring injury that could linger, which only adds more stress to an offense that has leaned on George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey in the passing game.

That was enough to get past Washington, but it may not hold up for long if the 49ers keep playing short-handed. If Evans and Samuel don’t return soon, defenses will start sitting on San Francisco’s plan and forcing the run game to do even more of the heavy lifting.

And while that run game looked strong against the Commanders, it still comes with questions. The return of fullback Kyle Juszczyk was a welcome development, and his toughness, blocking and receiving matter a lot to what San Francisco wants to do. But he has to stay healthy, too.

The next few weeks aren’t just about talent. The 49ers still have a road game against the Cowboys, a matchup that looks tougher than it appears because of the rivalry factor, and then a home date with the Vikings at Levi’s Stadium. On Nov. 29, the Seahawks come to town, and that game could be especially tricky if Mike Macdonald’s team has fixed its running game by then.

So yes, the 49ers have a chance. But the schedule is about to get more physical, more emotional and more demanding, and the injuries are starting to matter.

Purdy has been crisp, surgical and dependable. The problem is everything around him has to keep holding together, and that’s a lot to ask with young, hungry teams ahead and more bumps already showing up on the roster.

San Francisco is talented enough to dream about a perfect season. It’s also vulnerable enough to trip before it gets anywhere near 17-0 - or even 14-0.

Dolphins Kicking Decision Just Got More Complicated Than Fans Expected

The Dolphins spent time sorting through the kicking market this summer, and the picture has only gotten murkier. Justin Tucker was reinstated to the NFL in late July after serving a 10-game suspension for violating the leagues personal conduct policy, then went through workouts with the Jets, Saints, Colts and Dolphins as teams weighed whether to bring him in.

Miamis path at the position appears to be moving in a different direction, with Zane Gonzalez now part of the conversation after a career that has included several signings and releases. He most recently landed a one-year deal with the Dolphins for the 2026 season, a move that gives the team another layer to its kicking plans as the Tucker situation continues to linger in the background. Dolphins Fans Should Watch This Jaguars Trade Rumor Closely

Brian Thomas Jr. has become a name worth tracking far beyond Jacksonville, especially for a Dolphins team that has been searching for more help at wide receiver. The Jaguars young pass catcher has seen his role and production dip under the current coaching staff, and that downturn has only added fuel to the trade speculation around him. Miami, with its need for more talent at the position and a roster-building history that has leaned toward similar types of players, keeps coming up as a possible fit.

Jacksonvilles general manager has tried to tamp down the rumor mill, insisting the chatter is not driving the teams decisions. Still, Thomas reduced target share and the fact that his contract situation is getting closer to a pressure point make this the kind of situation that can linger, even when the public stance says otherwise. For Dolphins fans, the appeal is obvious, and so is the uncertainty, because a player like Thomas is exactly the sort of target that can move from speculation to something more serious quickly. Dolphins Kicker Decision Just Added To Miamis Growing Questions

The Dolphins are adding another layer to an already uneasy early-season picture by bringing in Zane Gonzalez after a workout that also included Justin Tucker, pending a physical. For a team trying to steady itself after an 0-5 start, even the kicker decision has become part of the larger conversation around where Miami goes next and how it can start correcting course.

Jeff Hafley said the team is self-evaluating and considering adjustments, a comment that fits the mood around the building as the losses pile up. Tuckers presence in the workout drew attention because of his experience, but the broader takeaway is that Miami is still sorting through options at a position that can swing close games while the rest of the roster searches for answers.
