Memphis Just Earned Major National Recognition Behind A Key Athletics Leader

Recognized for her dynamic leadership and significant contributions, Lynda Wray Black of the University of Memphis has been honored as the NCAA Division I Faculty Athletics Representative of the Year.

Lynda Wray Black has been named the 2026 NCAA Division I Faculty Athletics Representative of the Year, a recognition that puts a spotlight on her work at the University of Memphis and her role in supporting student-athletes.

Black, Memphis’ Faculty Athletics Representative since August 2015, has been charged with providing oversight and advocacy for the school’s student-athletes while working alongside campus and athletics leadership. She also has been part of President Bill Hardgrave’s President’s Council since 2022.

“In accepting this award, I want to highlight the core values of collegiate athletics - providing a pathway to a college degree and advancing the welfare of student-athletes,” Black said. “I am privileged to serve in this role for the University of Memphis and grateful to FARA, to the NCAA, and especially to the 360 Division I FARs as we collectively champion the best interests of student-athletes.”

The NCAA says a FAR serves as a faculty member at an NCAA member institution and acts as a liaison between the institution and its athletics department, while also representing the school in conference and NCAA matters. That role is central to advocating for student-athletes and helping maintain the right balance between academics and intercollegiate athletics.

Black also leads as president of 1A FAR, the national group for Faculty Athletics Representatives at NCAA Division I FBS institutions. Her NCAA involvement expanded further in 2025, when she was appointed to the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Oversight Committee for a two-year term.

Away from athletics administration, Black has been on the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law faculty since 2010. She holds the Bredesen Professorship of Law and teaches Secured Transactions, Sports Law, Remedies, Nonprofit Organizations and Contracts.

A Memphis native, Black earned her bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Memphis and her law degree from Yale Law School.

Memphis Faces Real Pressure As Penny's New Roster Earns Early Respect

Memphis is entering Penny Hardaways latest season with a different kind of expectation attached to it. The Tigers were picked to finish second in the American Conference Preseason Coaches Poll and picked up four first-place votes, a clear sign that the leagues coaches see this group as one of the conferences early standard-bearers. The recognition also reached the individual level, with senior Jayden Reid landing on the Preseason All-Conference First-Team and senior Tylik Weeks earning Second-Team honors.

Those selections, voted on by the 13 head coaches in the league, give Memphis both validation and a target. Preseason respect can be fleeting in a league that tends to sort itself out quickly, but it does tell you this roster has already made an impression before a game is played. For a program trying to turn pedigree into proof, the next step is making sure the preseason praise looks justified once the games start counting. [Read more 🡒]

Memphis Keeps Proving Why The American Still Runs Through The Tigers

Memphis kept its league push rolling with another convincing American Conference result, blanking Tulsa 4-0 and doing all of the damage after halftime. The Tigers have now gone unbeaten through their opening stretch of conference play at 3-0-1, and the performance fit the bigger pattern around this program: steady, organized and difficult to shake once they get rolling.

The second-half surge featured goals from Abby Forsgren, Ai Kitagawa, Ellis Kelly and Taliah Brooks, while Ava Galani handled the clean sheet in net. More than just another win, it pushed Memphis conference unbeaten streak to 33 matches, a reminder that anyone trying to take the league crown still has to go through the Tigers first. [Read more 🡒]
