John Calipari is back on the sideline against Memphis, but the Tigers walk into Wednesday’s exhibition with something more immediate than nostalgia: a 26-point burst from Jayden Reid and a win over an SEC opponent that gave Penny Hardaway’s team an early jolt of confidence.
Memphis handled Mississippi State 75-58 last Friday, and Reid’s first exhibition in a Tigers uniform turned into the night’s biggest storyline. The senior guard poured in 26 points on 11-of-15 shooting, added four assists and three steals, and did it all without a turnover.
He was efficient, steady and everywhere Memphis needed him to be. The Tigers also got 12 points from Nemanja Popovic, 11 from Luke Almodovar and 10 from Rihards Vavers.
That performance mattered because Memphis controlled the game from start to finish in all the ways that count. The Tigers were in front for more than 38 minutes, then opened the second half with an 11-0 run to stretch the margin to 50-35. Mississippi State never got within 14 points the rest of the way.
Reid’s path to Memphis gives the outing even more weight. He spent last season at Northwestern, where he averaged 10.1 points per game, and before that he played two seasons at South Florida.
As a sophomore there, he averaged 12.6 points and 3.6 assists. That kind of background makes him a valuable piece as Hardaway tries to settle on a reliable rotation, and his first showing suggested he can carry a real load.
Wednesday’s matchup brings a different level of challenge. Arkansas arrives after beating Gonzaga 76-72 in an exhibition Saturday, and Calipari’s group carries plenty of expectations after a 28-9 season that ended with an SEC Tournament title and a Sweet 16 trip. The Razorbacks were picked third in the SEC preseason poll, so this is another test against a team projected to sit near the top of the conference.
The coaching angle remains impossible to ignore. Calipari spent nine seasons at Memphis from 2000 through 2009, building the program into one of college basketball’s most recognizable names.
That stretch included the 2008 national championship game appearance, though the NCAA later vacated that season’s victories. Now he’s on the other side, leading Arkansas into Bud Walton Arena against the school where he made so much of his mark.
Hardaway has his own deep Memphis ties, and his Tigers already have some recent motivation in this series. Arkansas beat Memphis 99-75 in an exhibition at FedExForum last year, while Memphis took the last official meeting 84-79 in the Bahamas on November 23, 2023, before Calipari took over in Fayetteville. The game Wednesday won’t alter the official record, but it adds another chapter to a matchup that already has plenty of built-in interest.
For Memphis, though, the bigger question is how much of Friday’s showing carries over. Reid’s ball security and scoring touch will matter again against Arkansas’ talent and depth, and the Tigers will need help around him if they want to avoid leaning too hard on one hot hand.
They’ve shown they can make life difficult for an SEC opponent. Now they get another chance to prove it.
Wednesday’s exhibition tips at 8 p.m. ET and will stream on SEC Network+. Memphis opens the regular season November 2 against Iowa State in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, leaving little time to polish things before the games start counting.

Charles Huff Rumors Add Tension As Memphis Faces A Huge Test
Charles Huff spent part of the week trying to put out the kind of noise that tends to follow a successful coach in November, denying he has had contact with other programs about possible openings even as rumors keep circling around his name. For Memphis, the timing is less than ideal, because the Tigers are trying to keep their footing in a season that still has plenty in front of it while also staring at a roadblock in Army and its stubborn, hard-to-prepare-for option offense.
The focus inside the building, at least publicly, has stayed on the task at hand. Huff has leaned into the challenge Army presents, while quarterback Marcus Stokes pointed to the importance of controlling tempo and matching the opponent's style with a full-team effort after a strong recent showing. For Memphis, the stakes are straightforward enough: stay locked in, handle the pace, and keep the outside chatter from becoming part of the storyline. [Read more 🡒]
Arkansas Gets One More Frontcourt Test As Memphis Waits On Key Big Man
Arkansas is getting one last chance to stress-test its frontcourt before the games count, and Memphis provides a useful measuring stick in the final exhibition. The Tigers will bring forward Nemanja Popovic into the matchup after he turned in a strong showing in an earlier exhibition, giving Arkansas a look at a Memphis interior group that could shape the tone of the night.
For Memphis, the broader issue is less about one exhibition and more about what the roster will look like when the regular season arrives. Popovic is dealing with an NCAA eligibility dispute that could affect his availability, and the Tigers are still sorting through a group that includes several new pieces and possible absences. So while Arkansas gets a clean evaluation of its interior defense, Memphis gets one more chance to see how its frontcourt holds up while the larger picture remains unsettled. [Read more 🡒]
