Alante Brown’s college football journey has taken another turn - and this time, he’s hoping the third stop is the charm. The former Nebraska and Michigan State wide receiver is headed to Memphis, armed with a fresh NCAA waiver and one final year of eligibility to make his mark.
Now entering his seventh season of college football, Brown brings a wealth of experience and a chip on his shoulder. He’s not just looking for a fresh start - he’s looking to finally put all the pieces together and prove he can be a difference-maker, especially in the American Athletic Conference.
From Lincoln to East Lansing - and now Memphis
Brown’s story started back in 2020 when he committed to Nebraska. Over three seasons with the Huskers, he appeared in 30 games, catching 22 passes for 262 yards. While those numbers don’t jump off the stat sheet, his final year in Lincoln showed flashes of potential - 16 catches for 191 yards - suggesting he was starting to find his rhythm in the offense.
He also contributed on special teams, returning 22 kickoffs for 284 yards during his time in Lincoln. That versatility was part of what made him an intriguing transfer target.
In 2023, Brown made the move to Michigan State, hoping a change of scenery might unlock more of his game. But the production didn’t quite follow.
He logged just 5 receptions for 47 yards in a limited role with the Spartans. Still, he found a way to make an impact - this time as a return man.
His 2025 season included 11 kick returns for 346 yards, capped by a 92-yard touchdown return - the first score of his college career. That kind of explosiveness is exactly what Memphis hopes to tap into.
A final shot to shine in 2026
Now with the Tigers, Brown has one last opportunity to put it all together. Memphis is known for developing playmakers, especially those who can contribute in multiple phases of the game. Brown’s ability to stretch the field as a receiver and flip field position as a returner gives him a chance to carve out a meaningful role in 2026.
This move also puts him in a conference where his speed and experience could give him an edge. The AAC has seen its share of breakout players who took unconventional paths - and Brown is hoping to be the next name on that list.
A trend among former Huskers
Interestingly, Brown isn’t alone in taking the long road through the transfer portal. He’s the second former Nebraska wideout this winter to land at a third school. Malachi Coleman, who spent time with both the Huskers and Minnesota, recently transferred to Wisconsin.
For Brown, though, the focus is clear: one more year, one more shot, and a real chance to leave a lasting impression. Memphis is betting on his experience, speed, and hunger to finally break through. And if his journey so far is any indication, he’s not done writing his college football story just yet.
