The Timberwolves have been doing their homework ahead of the trade deadline-but don’t expect them to turn in anything flashy.
Despite weeks of speculation linking Minnesota to big-name point guards like Ja Morant and LaMelo Ball, the Wolves are reportedly staying put. According to team sources, the front office isn’t preparing for a blockbuster move. Instead, they’re focused on preserving the chemistry and financial flexibility that have helped them climb to fourth in the Western Conference.
And really, it’s hard to argue with the approach. This team has been one of the most balanced squads in the league this season, leaning on elite defense, efficient offense, and a rising superstar in Anthony Edwards. So why shake the foundation?
From a financial standpoint, Minnesota is just a few million shy of the second tax apron-a threshold that comes with heavy restrictions, especially for repeat spenders starting in 2025-26. That’s not a line the Wolves are eager to cross. The front office is thinking long-term, and mortgaging depth or future flexibility for a high-priced star doesn’t fit that plan.
To put it plainly: the upside of a blockbuster trade just doesn’t outweigh the cost right now.
President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly is still expected to stay active, but the focus is likely to be on smaller, more strategic moves. A versatile wing or a secondary ballhandler who can take some of the pressure off Edwards in crunch time could be on the radar. But even that might not be a pressing need anymore.
Minnesota’s younger rotation players have stepped up in recent weeks, giving the team even more reason to trust what’s already in-house. After a statement win over Milwaukee, one player summed up the team’s mindset perfectly: “We don’t need anything.”
As for the rumored targets-Morant and Ball-both come with hefty price tags. Morant is making $39.4 million this season, and while he’s been floated in trade chatter, nothing has gotten serious. Ball is at $37.9 million and hasn’t shown any signs of wanting out of Charlotte.
So, while the rest of the league might be chasing fireworks, the Timberwolves are leaning into stability. They’ve built something strong, and for now, they’re betting that standing pat might be their smartest move yet.
