Scotty Pippen Jr. may not be the first name that comes up when people talk about the Grizzlies heading into this season, but he shouldn’t be pushed to the side.
Ty Jerome is expected to get the opening-night start at point guard, yet Pippen Jr. has already shown he can swing things in Memphis. He only played 10 games before season-ending surgery on his right big toe, and the Grizzlies’ win total dipped without him. When he was back on the floor, the difference was obvious.
In those 10 games, Pippen Jr. put up 11.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 2.3 stocks per game. The shooting numbers weren’t especially clean, but the production still mattered. Memphis got a steady two-way presence, and that’s exactly the kind of player this roster can use.
That value goes beyond scoring. Pippen Jr. gives the Grizzlies playmaking, another dependable offensive option and a defensive edge that fits what they’re trying to build. Memphis wants to get tougher on that end, and he brings that attitude every time he checks in.
He’s also one of the better point-of-attack defenders on the roster, which matters even more because he does it as a smaller guard. With Cam Boozer selected third overall, the Grizzlies need as many quality two-way players around him as they can get early. Among the point guards on the team, Pippen Jr. is the cleanest fit for that role.
The Grizzlies do have a solid, underrated group of point guards, but Pippen Jr. stands out as the best defender of the bunch. There will be questions about where he fits long-term, especially with a team option for 2027, but his most recent stretch in Memphis suggests he could be in line for a strong season and maybe even a future with the team beyond that.
Last season was a rough one for Memphis, but the team is also in position to launch its rebuild. A core of Cedric Coward, Zach Edey and Cam Boozer could push the Grizzlies toward the play-in race immediately, and maybe even make them a surprise playoff team in year 1.
Still, any conversation about the 2026-27 Grizzlies has to include Pippen Jr. He’s capable of making a real impact, and Memphis knows it.
