Grizzlies Stunned as Pistons Dominate Inside to Extend Losing Streak

Grizzlies' struggles continue as they suffer a seventh straight loss, unable to contain the Pistons' dominant inside game and efficient offense.

In a game that started with promise but quickly turned into an uphill battle, the Memphis Grizzlies found themselves outmatched by the Detroit Pistons' dominance in the paint. The Pistons cruised to a 126-110 victory at Little Caesars Arena, marking Memphis' seventh consecutive loss.

Right from the tip-off, Detroit set the tone with an aggressive inside game that Memphis struggled to counter. The Pistons racked up a staggering 74 points in the paint, shooting an impressive 54.3 percent from the field.

Their ability to turn defensive stops into fast-break opportunities left the Grizzlies scrambling. Memphis, on the other hand, shot 42.7 percent and couldn't find a way to contain Detroit's size advantage around the rim.

Head coach Tuomas Iisalo didn't mince words about the decisive interior battle, stating, “We struggled with their size and physicality the whole night. Seventy-four points in the paint pretty much tells the story.”

The Grizzlies showed a flicker of momentum early in the third quarter with a 7-0 run, trimming Detroit's lead to 75-72 and injecting some energy into the game. However, the Pistons quickly snuffed out that spark with a commanding 21-7 run, extending their lead to 96-79 and maintaining control. Memphis never managed to close the gap to single digits again, with Detroit eventually stretching the lead to 22 points.

Despite the setback, several Grizzlies players put up noteworthy performances. Javon Small led the charge with a career-high 23 points, alongside three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Over his last four games, Small has averaged 18.3 points, marking a productive period in his young NBA journey.

Ty Jerome contributed 21 points and matched his career high with eight assists, marking his 11th consecutive game scoring in double figures. Jerome has now scored 20 or more points in four of his last five games.

Cam Spencer added 19 points and five assists, continuing to deliver from the perimeter for Memphis. Spencer also hit two three-pointers, extending his streak to 10 consecutive games with at least one three-pointer.

Yet, the night belonged to Detroit’s frontcourt. Jalen Duren was a force with 30 points and 13 rebounds, while Cade Cunningham orchestrated the game with 17 points, 15 assists, eight rebounds, and three steals.

The Pistons excelled in key areas that often tilt the game’s balance. They outpaced Memphis in fast-break points (24-8), points off turnovers (23-10), and offensive rebounds (19-13). Memphis managed 33 rebounds and just two blocks, underscoring their struggles.

Detroit’s ball movement was a highlight, with 36 assists that kept Memphis on their heels, consistently finding open lanes and shooters.

For Memphis, the task is clear: halt the losing streak before it spirals further. The Grizzlies are in search of the defensive grit and interior toughness that have been elusive. Their next opportunity to turn things around comes on March 16th, when they face the Chicago Bulls on the road at 7 p.m.
