Grizzlies Stun Fans by Trading Desmond Bane Amid His Hot Streak

Despite Desmond Bane's impressive performance, the Grizzlies' bold trade is proving strategically sound, offering long-term benefits and roster flexibility.

The Desmond Bane trade last summer certainly stirred up the NBA landscape, catching both Grizzlies and Magic fans off guard. Desmond Bane has been lighting it up for the Magic, but it’s evident that the Grizzlies made a strategic move in the long run.

The immediate reactions were mixed. Some believed the Grizzlies got the better end of the deal, while others thought Orlando made a savvy win-now move. The Grizzlies traded Bane for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks, and a pick swap.

In 63 games, Bane is averaging 20.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists, even after a slow start. The Magic are gaining momentum, and Bane’s performance is a big reason why.

As we near the end of the first full season post-trade, it's clear this deal benefited both sides. While Bane has provided a spark in Orlando, the Grizzlies were wise to chart a new course.

Grizzlies Needed a Roster Rebalance

Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, and Jaren Jackson Jr. once formed a promising trio in Memphis. Yet, it became apparent that this core might not deliver a championship. Despite injuries and roster challenges, they struggled against the Western Conference's top teams.

After last season’s trade deadline, the Grizzlies faltered, leading to the dismissal of coach Taylor Jenkins. Although the depth wasn’t enough to challenge teams like the Thunder, standout performances from Jaren Jackson Jr. and Bane made it clear a change was necessary.

Opportunities for Roster Enhancement

With the 2028 first-round pick from the Bane trade, the Grizzlies traded up to #11 to snag Cedric Coward-a move that paid off. While Kentavious Caldwell-Pope didn’t deliver as hoped, the selection of Coward was a home run.

Cedric Coward is shining as one of the top rookies from the 2025 NBA Draft, averaging 13.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in 50 games. His potential is undeniable. Importantly, moving Bane’s contract allowed the Grizzlies to gain Coward’s production and maintain flexibility for future additions.

The Grizzlies also acquired the more favorable pick between the Suns and Magic. Even with the Magic’s improvement, they might still end up in the Play-In Tournament. Regardless, the better pick should land in the teens in the stacked 2026 NBA Draft.

With multiple drafts and free agency ahead, the Grizzlies have ample opportunities to enhance their roster’s talent. Losing fan favorites like Desmond Bane is tough. Although this season has been challenging for Memphis and Bane is excelling in Orlando, the trade was a smart long-term decision for the Grizzlies.
