The Philadelphia 76ers may not be finished shopping after landing LeBron James, and another veteran name has surfaced on their radar: Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
According to insider Evan Sidery, Caldwell-Pope is expected to reach a buyout with the Memphis Grizzlies soon, and Philadelphia could be the landing spot. Sidery reported, “Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is expected to soon reach a buyout with the Grizzlies, and he could follow LeBron James to the Sixers,” and added, “Philadelphia plans to add one or two more bench pieces at veteran’s minimum deals to further solidify their title aspirations.”
That would fit the way the 76ers have approached the 2026 offseason. They already swung big by trading for Jaylen Brown, then added James on a two-year, $8 million minimum contract.
With Tyrese Maxey, V.J. Edgecombe, and Joel Embiid also in place, the top of the roster looks strong enough to challenge anybody.
The concern now is the other end of the depth chart, where the second unit still looks thin.
That’s where Caldwell-Pope comes in. At 33, he still offers the kind of two-way profile teams want from a bench veteran: he can space the floor, defend on the perimeter, and give a lineup some stability. Last season in 51 games with Memphis, he averaged 8.4 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.2 blocks while shooting 41.0% from the field and 31.6% from three.
A buyout would open the door for Pope to chase a better situation, and the LeBron connection makes the fit easy to see. The two played together with the Lakers from 2018-2021 and won a championship together, beating the Heat in the Finals. Their chemistry carried beyond the court, too, and that history could matter if Pope is looking for a familiar path.
He also won another title in Denver three years later, but the possibility of a reunion with James is now in play again. With James in the final years of his career, Philadelphia could use every bit of help it can get, and a former championship teammate would be a logical addition if the buyout comes together.
For now, the key step is still the same: Caldwell-Pope has to finalize a buyout with Memphis. Only then can the Sixers, or any other interested team, move in.
If Philadelphia does keep adding, the options will be limited to minimum deals because of the team’s financial situation. Among the names still available are Gabe Vincent, Cam Thomas, Doug McDermott, Bruce Brown, and Kevin Love. Whatever comes next, the Sixers have already had a huge summer, and any extra move would just add to it.
