Grizzlies Guard Move Keeps Opening Night Battle Under Pressure

Despite acquiring D'Angelo Russell, the Memphis Grizzlies continue their strategic guard reshuffle, intensifying competition for roster spots ahead of the new season.

The Memphis Grizzlies have moved on from another guard, and this one never even made it to the court in a Memphis uniform.

D’Angelo Russell is now searching for his next stop less than a month after the Grizzlies brought him in from the New Orleans Pelicans in a deal that also sent Memphis Micah Peavy, a second-round pick and a second-round pick swap. That trade cost the Grizzlies two players who were not part of their long-term picture, including veteran Taj Gibson, who has since required.

Another name is out of the picture as well. Hawkins is being released, and according to ESPN, both sides agreed to part ways so he could try to catch on with another team - possibly one of the clubs that still has a two-way spot open. Memphis had some hope he could earn a place at the back end of the roster to open the season after he flashed elite shooting in college, but that skill has not fully carried over to the NBA.

The roster math keeps tightening. With Russell gone, the Grizzlies are down to 17 standard contracts, which means two more players still have to go before the season starts.

Peavy looks like a candidate to be on the bubble, and so does Kris Murray, who came over in the Ja Morant trade. A consolidation deal is also possible. Walter Clayton Jr., another former first-round pick acquired from Utah in February in the Jaren Jackson Jr. swap, appears safe for now, though nothing is off the table.

That is the reality of a rebuild. Memphis has spent this stretch taking chances on players whose college resumes once carried real buzz but whose first NBA stops did not deliver. Taylor Hendricks and OMax Prosper are part of that group, and both saw meaningful minutes during Memphis’ messy 2025-26 season, when the Grizzlies seemed to roll out a different starting five almost every night in the spring.

There have been some signs worth holding onto. Ty Jerome has put himself in position to be the likely lead guard for 2026-27 after a strong finish to last season once he finally got back from injury. Scotty Pippen Jr., if he can stay healthy, should remain in the mix, and Cam Spencer will be in the conversation for minutes too.

For Hawkins, the search continues. His second opportunity with Memphis barely amounted to more than a Media Day photo, and now he is looking for a third chance somewhere else.

Grizzlies Just Sent A Clear Message About This Roster Overhaul

The Grizzlies are continuing to reshape their roster in a way that makes the direction of the offseason hard to miss. After sending Ja Morant to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Jerami Grant and Kris Murray, Memphis added more movement by bringing in Jordan Hawkins from the New Orleans Pelicans as part of a multi-player deal, another step in a broader reset around the roster.

Jordan Hawkins did not stay in Memphis long, though, as the team moved on from him and opened the door for him to enter free agency. The quick turnaround adds another layer to a summer already defined by change, and it leaves the Grizzlies with a clearer picture of how aggressively they are willing to keep adjusting the roster as they settle into this new phase.
