Grizzlies Fans Shouldnt Ignore Walter Clayton Jrs Next Opportunity

The Dallas Mavericks shake up their lineup, bringing in a fresh talent with potential while bidding goodbye to a seasoned veteran.

The Mavericks moved quickly after waiving Dwight Powell, using the opening to add a promising backcourt piece in Walter Clayton Jr.

Dallas signed the former first-round pick to a two-way contract on Wednesday, giving the organization another young guard to develop after Clayton became available when Memphis cut him loose earlier in the week. The Grizzlies waived Clayton and Micah Peavy on Monday as they worked to lock in their regular-season roster before the 5 p.m. ET deadline.

“The Memphis Grizzlies are waiving 2025 No. 18 pick Walter Clayton Jr. and former second-round pick Micah Peavy, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania on Monday. The moves helped Memphis finalize its roster for the regular season by the 5 p.m.

ET cut-down deadline. The Grizzlies entered Monday with 17 players on standard contracts and three more on two-way deals,” ESPN’s Michael C.

Clayton’s path to Dallas is interesting beyond just his draft status. The national champion guard also played college basketball for Dusty May, giving the Mavericks another reason to take a look.

To clear space for Clayton, Dallas waived Powell on Monday, a move that came with real emotional weight inside the locker room. Kyrie Irving spoke warmly about Powell’s influence on the franchise.

“He’ll really be missed. He gave a lot to the franchise.

Just a consummate professional, good friend of mine, good friend of a bunch of us on the team, past and present. He represented a lot here in the city of Dallas, and he did a lot for us,” Irving said.

Powell’s exit closes a long and meaningful chapter for the Mavericks, but the team is also clearly trying to invest in what comes next. Clayton enters the organization with a reputation as a dangerous shooter in college, and Dallas will be hoping that touch returns at the NBA level.

Brett Siegel reported the signing Wednesday, and the Mavs are betting that Clayton’s scoring ability and comfort handling the ball can carry over. If Irving is traded for any reason, Dallas could eventually have a chance to give Clayton a larger role later in the season.

Cam Boozer's Grizzlies Debut Raised A Bigger Question Than His Shot

Cam Boozers first night in a Grizzlies uniform came in a comfortable 123-103 win over the Jazz, and the box score hinted at the sort of all-around impact Memphis hoped to see from him. He chipped in seven points, 11 rebounds and five assists in his NBA debut, while Ty Jeromes 45-point outburst powered the offense and helped keep the game firmly in hand.

The shot was the obvious blemish, with Boozer going 2-of-15 from the field, but his value showed up in the larger flow of the game. Even with that rough scoring line, he finished with a plus-32, the kind of mark that says plenty about how the minutes went when he was on the floor and why Memphis has reason to keep paying attention to what he can do beyond making baskets. Grizzlies May Have Found Two Opening Night Difference Makers

The Grizzlies got a clean opening-night win over Utah, and the most encouraging part was how quickly two newcomers fit into the shape of the game. Memphis rolled to a 123-103 victory in its season opener, with Jerami Grant adding 15 points in his debut and the overall rotation looking more settled than you might expect this early in the year.

Ty Jerome gave the offense an immediate jolt in his first game running the show, while Zach Edey made his presence felt in the less glamorous areas that often decide whether Memphis can control a night. Jerome's scoring burst and Edey's work on the interior helped tilt the game in the Grizzlies' favor, and if those two can keep bringing that kind of impact, Memphis may have already found a pair of useful opening-night answers. Ty Jerome Just Gave A Top Rookie A Brutal NBA Welcome

Darryn Petersons NBA debut came in a tough setting at FedExForum, where the rookie guard got his first taste of the league against a Memphis group that wasted no time turning the night into a lesson. Peterson still managed to get on the board with nine points, along with four rebounds and three assists, but the bigger story quickly became Ty Jeromes takeover for the Grizzlies as the home crowd watched the game swing sharply in Memphis favor.

Jerome put together the kind of performance that can overwhelm even a promising newcomer, powering the Grizzlies to a 123-103 win and drawing plenty of reaction from the fans along the way. For Memphis, it was another reminder of how quickly a game can get away from an opponent when one player catches fire, and for Peterson, it was a first NBA night that came with a clear introduction to just how demanding this level can be.
