A Monday night Summer League matchup in Las Vegas puts two lottery picks front and center, with Cameron Boozer and the Memphis Grizzlies facing Morez Johnson Jr. and the Dallas Mavericks.
Memphis has already shown what it can do in Las Vegas. The Grizzlies beat the Chicago Bulls by one in their lone game there, and Boozer was a big part of the buzz after scoring 23 points in his Las Vegas debut.
There’s still a real chance he sits this one out, though, since Memphis also played in the Salt Lake City Summer League earlier this month. Even with that possibility hanging over the game, the betting market has Memphis favored by 9.5 points.
Dallas, meanwhile, is still searching for its first win at 0-2 this summer, but Johnson has given the Mavericks a clear bright spot. The rookie went for 27 points in his Summer League debut, then added 10 points in his second game against the Lakers.
In that first outing, he also chipped in eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks while Dallas came up short against the Golden State Warriors. For a team trying to build around Cooper Flagg, Johnson’s early showing matters, and his development could be a major piece of whether this group can eventually push toward playoff contention.
Johnson’s debut was the kind of performance that turns heads right away. He scored 27 points, had the game-high, and shot 12-for-17 from the field against Golden State. That was followed by a quieter night against Los Angeles, but Dallas managed only 70 points as a team in that game, so it was hardly a clean offensive environment for him to work with.
Memphis brings a deeper Summer League look than just Boozer. The Grizzlies have also played Cedric Coward, Javon Small, Taylor Hendricks and others, and they put up nearly 200 points in their Las Vegas opener against Chicago. Of course, as with any Summer League game, the rotation picture can shift quickly, and Memphis could decide to hold out some of those players, which would change the line.
Dallas has shown both sides of the scoreboard in Las Vegas. It was involved in a game that produced over 190 total points against Golden State, then allowed the Lakers to score more than 90 in its second game. After failing to clear this total in that 70-point loss, the Mavericks now face a Memphis group that looks capable of pushing the pace again if the main pieces are on the floor.
The expectation here is for points, especially if Dallas can rediscover the offensive rhythm it had in its opener. With Memphis installed as a heavy favorite, this one has the feel of a Summer League game where the talent on the floor could decide whether the scoring gets out of hand.
Odds refresh periodically and are subject to change.
